Scones growing more in width than height?

Why don't my scones rise? They seem to grow out the way instead of upwards. I use this recipe, www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/1572671/apple-scones-with-blackberry-compote

You've cut them out the at the wrong angle, roll the dough the other way before you cut.

Is your mix too wet? Mine spread if I add too much liquid.

And is your oven hot enough?
