How do I cook corn on the cob?

Have bought corn on the cob for dh and dd1 and belatedly remembered that the last time I did it, it was as hard as the hobs of hell as my mil says (whatever they are!!). Anyhow, so what do I do with them - if they are not nice again I will not be popular!

I buy frozen ones and boil them for 10 minutes usually. Not sure how long if fresh though sorry.

steam them for 15-20 mins.

I have to say that bought ones are never brilliant - they really need to be fresh off the plant and straight into cooking - apparently the sugars change to starch really quickly.

I love barbecued corn, or I cook it under a hot grill, turning it when it starts to go dark brown.

we boil 8-10 mins, but the secret is tons of butter

Hmm thanks ladies. Am sure I boiled them for this long last time (must be the way I'm looking at them!) but will try again! Oh do I need lots of water or just enough to cover - maybe this is where I went wrong?
