Fishcakes - do I cook fish first?

Thawing some salmon and plan to make fishcakes, should I cook it before mixing with potato etc?

Also, would sweet potato and normal work?

Yes cook fish first. Sweet potatoes may be a bit soggy for a fish cake but probably would work. I find them too sweet but I've never tried.

Thank you, I did wonder about the consistency, think I'll stick to regular potatoes.
