Rather than making a white sauce, can I use a soup? Which one? I thought cream
Of celery but they don't have it.

Mushroom? One of those condensed ones

Chowder?

Mmmm, fish pie...

We use natural yogurt with a tsp of mustard in. Think it was from a recipe by The Dinner Lady originally - might have been a mixture of double cream and yogurt in hers that's been downgraded over the years. It's really nice, anyway.

Wow that's such a good idea. Does the yogurt cook ok?
Can you use low fat?

Thanks very much. I bought condensed mushroom soup AND natural yoghurt and now have to decide what to do!

Yeah, it cooks fine. We fry off some onion and diced carrot, add some frozen peas, then stir in yogurt and mustard. Put raw chopped fish in the baking dish first, then some wilted baby spinach, then the veg in sauce, then mashed potato on top. Then cook for about 30 mins I think. It's really nice.

We use low fat, because it's what's in the fridge. I resent buying stuff for recipes where the pot size doesn't match the amount that you need!

Do you think I could use curly leaf kale instead of the spinach? I happen to have some that needs using.

I'd out the kale on the side, bit bulky in a dish I'd say.

mckenzie · 25/04/2014 18:56

Well after all that the DCs, who normally eat anything, turned their noses up at the smell and refused to even try it!
I used the yoghurt mixed with an egg and mustard (as found on a BBC good foods recipe). I also added sweetcorn and keep the kale on the side with the other veg as suggested.
I thought it was flipping delicious! DCs don't know what they've missed. DH can give his judgement later when he gets home. (I did have a small amount of leftover single cream so the mashed potato got a little extra lift for a change!)

Can I freeze what's left? DH is enjoying it thank goodness but there's still loads left.

Jamie O uses creme fraiche cheese and tsp mustard. Not v low cal but lovely

Oh yeah, I completely forgot the cheddar (two handfuls, grated) in the Dinner Lady recipe - sorry. And some lemon juice too. Was clearly trying to convince myself that the recipe is healthier than it is!
