Fresh Beetroot?

We missed the farmers market yesterday and I desperately need raw beetroot.
The supermarkets only stock it pickled in vinegar.
Any ideas please?

A farm shop? My local one had some in yesterday. (North Yorkshire)

AvaLou · 14/08/2006 12:14

We sadly have none nearby , as we are in London.
It may have to be a trip to Borough Market, or (shudder) Selfridges.
Why do supermarkets not sell it? It makes me so mad.

Hi, I live in North London, and our local grocers sell it, and I've just been to the health store which has a veg bit in the back, and they have purple and golden beetroot!
Hope you find some!

You could always try contacting your local allotment association. You may be able to buy some of one of the tenants......worht a try??

AvaLou · 14/08/2006 16:35

Golden Beetroot! At a grocers? You lucky thing!

I will be asking at the allotment tomorrow after that suggestion as the pathway to our local park goes through it, I'm just a bit scared as most Londoners are grumpy buggers.

Tell more please FioFio , we go to Canterbury regularly and like to stop in 'new' places for lunch and shopping on the way.

I got raw beetroot in Tesco at twickenham last week so some of them sell it. Also there is a farm shop at osterley park if you're anywhere near there.

AvaLou · 14/08/2006 16:58

Oh really! Is that a huge Tesco, as ours is medium size, and they don't even stock fresh garlic.
We are nowhere near Osterley park unfortunately.

Just a thought, I've been getting beetroot in my veg box which I get from riverford , but I've just had a look at the 'what's in this weeks box' section, and beetroot is only appearing in the large boxes, it may be worth contacting them if you fancy it as sure they can re-jig some stuff for you.
Have also just had a look at abel cole and they do sell it individually, i.e. without you needing to buy a whole veg box.
What were you going to do with it? I've now got a craving for roasted beetroot since thinking about where to get it from!

LemonTart · 14/08/2006 19:35

are you sure about the supermarkets? My local ones always stock fresh, small Tesco and medium Sainsburys both do (I love beetroot braised in coconut milk) -are you looking in the right place? Maybe worth asking?

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/08/2006 19:36

Sainsbury's often sell bunched raw beetroot.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 14/08/2006 19:39

I also have some in my garden, but i dont think that'll help you

Do I sell them for 60p, THATS the question

LittleMonkeysMum · 14/08/2006 22:17

I NEED to know how to do beetroot braised in coconut milk, it sounds delicious!

AvaLou · 15/08/2006 08:49

I have a craving for all things beetroot. I want to make beetroot crisps, beetroot bahjis, beetroot bean burgers and beetroot and goats cheese salad. Yummy!

I will look into those vegetable boxes, we've been considering getting one every week for a while. Or just buy it from FioFio!
