Do you have a cake decorating shop near you? They often hire out cake tins in all sorts of shapes including numbers. If you use a shaped tin I would make a madeira cake as is a bit firmer than a sponge and turns out of the tin more easily. If you need a recipe post again and I'll dig one out. Where do you live BTW, I'm in S Yorks and have quite a lot of cake making eqpt, happy to lend or help.

dont stress yerself

agree smarties on top, they love em

Could do sponge as Cod suggests, with a 2 in buttons/smarties etc on the top. Easy and effective!

I use that terrible icing in little tubes to write and draw on the top. Full of crap but it is GLITTERY!! Make up for it by making a carrot cake for the base.
Not sure your child will appreciate the bother of making a number 2 shape (ooh that sounds yucky!) so just make a round one.

I'd hire number tin as suggested, ice white with icing of your choice eg easy glacé, then edge with either smarties or chocolate buttons - smarties more festive but choc buttons slightly less evil.

other good standby is round sponge iced as clock with hands pointing to age of child

It's their birthday! Load 'em up with sugar and watch 'em go mental. It's only once a year.

ooh sponge with smarties on - just fancy that myself with a cup of tea. never mind the two year old what about the 42 year olds...

Thanks for offer of equipment PandaG!! I live abroad otherwise might take you up on it.!

Think you lot are right.. A sponge with smarties sounds pretty yummy at the moment. I guess I stick the smarties into glace icing. Is that right? Am sure Delia must have a recipe..

I just made this one for my dh's birthday-ably assisted by my ds-and it went down a treat. Not too sweet but you can put whatever you want in the middle or on top

BigSister · 09/08/2006 13:09

This looks absolutely GORGEOUS!!! MMMMM...

It is, and it's simple. Which I like (and need!)
I threw all the ingredients into a bowl, whisked with a hand whisk, and like magic I had made a cake
