Something easy to read, even entertaining ideally, and suitable for a novice with a strong preference for red wine, please? Ta in advance!

Jancis Robinson is very good. I would recommend this book

Jancis Robinson is good, but her books are very heavy going - only for the enthusiast.
Try Vinalogy - it's a small fun book for beginners in wine or
Wines and Spirits Looking behind the label written by the Wine and Spirit Education Trust.
If he's keen how about a subscription to Decanter Magazine

Hi again,
There is a great new game out about wine CORKERS - you could always buy him that. I think its on Amazon or it has its own website www.corkerswinegame.com

Probably too late for your hubby's birthday, but 'Drink This: Wine Made Simple' is brilliant, funny, pithily written, red wine heavy and perfect for beginners. I highly recommend this. We have worked through each chapter and intend to start at the beginning again next year.
