I put royal icing on a cake my mum made, but for a sponge, use rollable (sp?) icing. I bought some sugar paste, food colour for paste (think you can buy the coloured stuff already), and some edible decorating glitter. (I am not a confectioner so don't know the lingo.) I got 3 sizes of star cutters and rolled the paste thin.

I used the stars to disguise the seam where I couldn't disguise the join of the icing around the top edge. The white icing, the coloured stars (pink glitter I had a girl) in the different sizes stuck on with icing, looked absolutely BRILLIANT and very professional.

You can still add the sugar paste decoration. It looked absolutely BRILLIANT
