Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Octopus37 · 07/02/2014 14:26

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

Lunch for me is-crispy salad, chopped tomatoes, prawns with a spoon of Greek yoghurt, avocado and sprinkled roasted beans. YumSmile

Coumarin · 11/02/2014 13:04

Captain I was underweight because of anxiety last year and if I don't eat enough it starts dropping off again. Not good. Weird because when I had weight to lose a few tears ago, if I didn't eat enough the weight would stay on. Can't win! Grin I'm at my ideal weight now and feeling much better.

Coumarin · 11/02/2014 13:06

Sounds lovely Dame

frugalfuzzpig · 11/02/2014 13:10

What do you mean by roasted beans dame? I didn't know you could roast them - do you mean kidney beans and that sort of thing?

I am very excited, we are using our slow cooker today, for the first time ever.

We've had it about 2 years Blush

Got a beef brisket in there with potatoes and onion. Decided to keep it simple while we get used to using it. Smells amazing!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/02/2014 13:15

Waitrose Food Doctor roasted bean mix, think it was 2.99. Gives a nice crunch to a salad. It's over by the nuts etc.

I'm REALLY enjoying food atm, whereas before it was loaded with guilt/habit / never felt full etc.

My bra is noticeably too big now,I can get my hand in the front of the cup it's so baggy and the band needs to be tightened. Woo hooo!Grin

TawdryTatou · 11/02/2014 13:51

I'm afraid quinoa is my nemesis, Eddie, so I buy the Merchant Gourmet sachets which makes it dead easy. It's a stodgy mess otherwise Blush

TawdryTatou · 11/02/2014 13:52

I'd say quinoa is more like couscous than anything, but gluten free and with more flavour. Needs olive oil and lemon juice to pep it up though.

Sleepwhenidie · 11/02/2014 14:04

Great article on ostensibly, giving up sugar, but actually about eating and listening to your body here

CaptainHindsight · 11/02/2014 14:56

Glad you are feeling better Coumarin

I am about half a stone away from my ideal weight.

I blame all the new years get together lunches and the wine/gin/vodka

nilbyname · 11/02/2014 15:15

captain it's very simple

In some oil fling in some mustard seeds, cumin, chili flakes, turmeric and garam masala, when fragrant add in chicken and coat well. Then add 2 onions finely diced.

Then I add in chicken stock jelly thing. Bit of water, handful of cherry toms, cauliflower, minced garlic cloves, bring to boil, on a low simmer for 30mins stir in a tub of Greek yogurt. Serve with lots of coriander.

CaptainHindsight · 11/02/2014 15:16

Thank you nilby [Flowers]

Thats tea on Wednesday sorted.

EddieReadersglasses · 11/02/2014 16:03

This thread is making me hungry! For good stuff though. Thanks for the quinoa link sleep I'll try and get hold of some (my local asda doesn't have it unsurprisingly!)

EddieReadersglasses · 11/02/2014 16:12

Another great link sleep, very balanced, I think I'm going to adopt a less draconian approach to sugar!

Coumarin · 11/02/2014 17:23

Thanks for link Sleep

Roasted veg (onion, pepper and courgettes) and bulgar wheat with quinoa and melted cheese on top. Dried cherries and almonds for a snack.

Spag Bol with wholemeal spaghetti for dinner.

Slightly spoilt by having to have some if those cystitis sachet full of salt and sucrose. Yuck!

Coumarin · 11/02/2014 17:25

Porridge at breakfast with added mixed seeds. I love porridge.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/02/2014 18:26

I had Aldi steak and green salad for tea yum yum!Grin

TawdryTatou · 11/02/2014 18:51

Okay, today's food:

B - Rhubarb, Greek yoghurt and granola.
L - quinoa salad with roasted sweet potato and feta.
A Sainsbury's fruit and nut snack pot with almonds, dried cherries and custard raisins.
D - gluten free spaghetti with good olive oil, mussels, rocket, Parmesan, pine nuts and black pepper.

Dinner was gorgeous.

Sleepwhenidie · 11/02/2014 19:10

I had a boiled egg and a slice of granary toast and butter for breakfast.

A latte and slice of granary toast with almond butter and half a banana mid morning.

A plate of smoked salmon with a whole avocado and another slice of granary bread and butter at lunch.

A tub of M&S superwholefood salad at 4pm.

DH is away so I bought myself a bean hot pot from the eye wateringly expensive fantastic local deli and am going to have that with a small tin of tuna in olive oil and cheese melted on top with green beans on the side for my dinner. Greek yoghurt and blueberries and nuts if I am still hungry after that.

Loads of green tea.

Not a lot of cooking going on here today! I am very lazy when its just me Smile.

Sleepwhenidie · 11/02/2014 21:02

Tawdry please talk me through roasting rhubarb - what do you add?

Octopus37 · 11/02/2014 21:08

I have been quite rubbish today tbh:
2 Slices of seeded toast with no sugar peanut butter
An apple
2 Slices of seeded toast with carmalised onion humus
3 Biscuits
Some Salt and Vinegar Pringles
Filled pasta with tomato and olive sauce and some salad
2 Nature valley crunch bars (I mean two packs of two bars)

Will do better tomorrow, tbh really in the wrong mood today.

LoveSewingBee · 11/02/2014 21:34

Today:
breakfast as usual: oat porridge with semi skimmed milk and green tea
morning: black coffee
lunch: 2 thin slices of homemade spelt bread (lasts much longer than shop bought bread as it is very compact so you can slice it much thinner) with tomatoes, cucumber and cress. 2 glasses of water
dinner: stir fried chinese cabbage, pak choi, red onion, red pepper, bean sprouts, chicken breast with fresh ginger, garlic and chilli with noodles and prawn crackers and satay sauce made with a base of sauteed onion, garlic, chilli and ginger (fresh) with home made peanut butter and water to make it thinner. Was a bit spicy so with lots of water to drink.
Rest of evening: green tea and water.

I actually drink green tea as I heard that it is high in anti-oxidants and because I tend to drink way too much coffee.

Sleepwhenidie · 11/02/2014 21:43

Love - Sad I've said it before (I promise not to again, sorry if I am being annoying, I have good intentions Smile ) and I mean it for your health as much as your desire to lose weight, you need more fat and protein. Your weight won't move and you will end up ill if you keep depriving yourself of these things longer term, you are getting lots of veg but beyond that it's really not healthy eating....

Octopus - tough day? What's going on Sad?

frugalfuzzpig · 11/02/2014 22:07

Hope you feel better tomorrow octopus Thanks

I've had a shit day too, still waiting for period to show up Hmm so just generally feel like crap.

It's certainly showing me how I crave sugar/carbs when I feel crap, and how eating them lead to wanting more!

The eggs for breakfast is going well though. I don't really miss cereal in the mornings and am already finding eggs more comforting. Need to replace our metal bowl for scrambled eggs though as microwaving them just isn't the same!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 11/02/2014 22:23

What's wrong with love's food diary?Confused porridge -great for you, light lunch-perfectly fine and chicken and veg stir fry -protein and veg. I'm confusedConfused

LaVitaBellissima · 11/02/2014 22:34

Ooh love this thread, can I join? Smile

I love eggs for breakfast, and do try and eat lots of fruit and veg, however DH is Italian and would happily live on salami and pasta Shock

My main aim is to stop drinking wine in the week, as I know this will have a knock on effect on my general energy levels and motivation with everything else.

I will start from tomorrow but today I've had

Breakfast - a cup of tea 1/2 sugar

After school drop off - 2 cups of tea and a Portuguese tart

lunch - big plate of stir fried veg with a piece of oven baked cod with a sundries tomato sauce (Has anyone else tried the Saucy Fish company?)

Afternoon - pile of green grapes another cup of tea

Dinner - giant plate of pasta with a homemade sausage, cherry tomato and mascarpone sauce.

Lots of water and no wine :)
