Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Octopus37 · 07/02/2014 14:26

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

That sounds really good! I didn't know you could buy wholemeal cows cows…

I had left over ratatouille, Im hungry as I forgot to have the cold chicken with it so going to have that now!

fuzzpig · 24/03/2014 14:48

:o at cows cows :o

Oops it said wholewheat couscous (not wholemeal oops Blush no idea if there's a difference between that and regular cous cous! Confused I didn't need much of it anyway, the veg was the main bulk of it.

Funny how we are already so much more aware - you saying you are hungry because of not having the chicken ie protein. I discovered today that having fruit in the morning is not good for me :( I had an apple before the delivery arrived and definitely noticed a sugar crash and cravings much earlier despite then having my eggs when they arrived. I caved and had cereal this morning! Back on track now though thanks to having planned my lunch (I'm sure I wouldn't have bothered making something decent if it wasn't on The Plan!)

Throat still hurts though :(

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/03/2014 14:49

Stupid phone Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/03/2014 14:50

Have you gargled with salt water? Hope it goes soon Thanks

fuzzpig · 24/03/2014 14:51

It was crazy jack brand couscous btw

fuzzpig · 24/03/2014 14:52

Will do gargling tonight definitely. Dilute corsodyl seems to help prevent tonsillitis for me :) off to work now!

Risette · 24/03/2014 19:14

Hope the gargling works fuzz. Maybe a honey and lemon tea before bed ?

I've still got a pressure headache and sinus pain. It's been with me since Saturday. Putting it down to allergies but then I thought maybe it has something to do with my change in eating habits. Ok this is unlikely...

Today's major step forward to swap a sandwich for a tuna salad at lunch. More importantly I didn't have a cake either. Feeling pleased about that. Really should be making my own lunch though.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 24/03/2014 19:54

I had a bad head ache when I first gave up sugar, it could be Ris. Hope it goes soon.

Today's food was-egg and 1 piece of soda bread with benecol.

Left over ratatouille, broccoli forgot the chicken so had it later.

Egg sandwich on whole wheat bread-tasted like pap but I was so hungry I was rumbling and I was out do needed to get something quickGrin

Salmon, half a baked potato, green salad with half an avocado with roasted beans sprinkled on top-was utterly delicious! 1 benecol yoghurtHmm

Risette · 24/03/2014 20:26

I bought natural yoghurts. I didn't think I would like them due to a lifetime of sweetened ones, but it was ok. Think I can continue with them, especially if I add a few blueberries or raspberries when I have them. Even my toddler liked them, which I was pleased about.

Your dinner sounded nice Dame. I've got salmon for tomorrow. Going to cook up my green lentils too.

Bramshott · 25/03/2014 12:37

Inspired by you lot, I am drinking a cup of Miso soup for lunch and it's yummy! Will probably have a second lunch of cheese on rye toast about 2.00 Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/03/2014 13:20

Will look our for miso soup.

I just had avocado, tomato, Bulger wheat and quinowa mix and roasted beans-yum!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/03/2014 14:44

I'm making what we call Italian chicken for dinnerGrin

Sweat onion, bacon, carrot, celery, potato. Add squirt of garlic paste and tomato puree and some stock, then add chicken and a tin of barlotti beans and another of canelloni beans plus some pasata and water and tons of black pepper and dried parsley. Simmer for ages.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/03/2014 14:45

Oh and when it's done add chopped spinach or shredded cabbage and put the lid on so it steams in the residual heat.

xmastime2013 · 25/03/2014 14:51

Today: omelette with spinach, sweet potato and cheddar for breakfast, latte midmorning, zero noodles with turkey meatballs and pasta sauces for lunch, a naughty curly wurly with a cup of tea. Tonight's dinner is covent garden leek and potato soup and a piece of wholemeal bread.

icanmakeyouicecream · 25/03/2014 20:23

B: poached egg on x2 weight watchers bread toasted
L: tuna and egg salad
S: half a bagel
D: soup 2x weight watchers bread

Sleepwhenidie · 25/03/2014 21:05

What is this 'weight watchers bread' of which you speak icanConfused...feels reminiscent of the other day when I mentioned the words 'tracksuit' on MN Vogue thread....it was tumbleweed Grin. If you want bread, get some really good, proper bread, with as few ingredients as possible. Enjoy it, keep it as part of one meal a day, rather than through the course of it Smile ...what was in your soup, are you still hungry?

Rummikub · 25/03/2014 21:36

Uh oh, I had the weetabix milk drink this morning for breakfast on the go. I knew it was wrong, but bought it anyway. Just in case anyone else is tempted, it was vile!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 25/03/2014 21:57

Oh Rummi, tut tutWink

fuzzpig · 25/03/2014 22:16

Thanks for letting us know, rummi :o

Rummikub · 25/03/2014 22:43

I did it purely as research for this thread of course...

Risette · 26/03/2014 08:57

Two weetabix and a poached egg on toast this morning for me. I haven't seen the weetabix drink thankfully!

Yes, I have changed my opinion too these days on all things labelled 'diet'. I think going back to 'real' food is the way. I read ingredient lists now on everything and avoid anything that is full of additives or with 'ose' in it.

Plus, what are you all drinking? I have given up all sodas (actually for a while now) still need to drink more water though.

One other thing. I have now got a huge spot on my chin. Never normally get them. Do you think this might be a sign of body releasing crap. I'd like to think so Smile

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/03/2014 09:04

I've stopped drinking juices,I never drank soda anyway. So really I just have tea with soya or water. Occasionally if I have a sweet craving I have a soya hot chocolate which seems to so me eating half a packet of chocolate biscuits. I think there will come a point where I can eat chocolate sensibly but I'm not there yet so will continue avoiding it.

Oh and I bought some green tea , not tried it yet!

Risette · 26/03/2014 09:09

I have to have green tea with something else in it like lemon. I bought some twinnings peppermint tea which I like. Still drink lots of black tea during the day though...and one cup of coffee.

I think if I have less tea and more water I'd be less inclined to have something with it, I.e biscuits! It's just a habit. Although as I didn't buy any in my shop last week I'm training myself to have the handful of nuts!

Rummikub · 26/03/2014 11:08

Biscuits with tea are a habit! I sometimes have a chunk of crystallised ginger with my tea instead. Love ginger.

Drinks wise, don't do fizzy stuff, mainly tea, milk and water (though I don't drink enough water), occasional coffee (once a week, less).

Oh I do like Ribena, again rarely, less than once a fortnight.

Risette · 26/03/2014 11:40

I'm hoping my teeth will see the benefit too!
