Thread for those who are trying to eat "better"

Following on from yesterdays thread "Do I eat too much", which I posted on, I was unsurprising told that what I eat is crap. Have been feeling pretty crap the last few weeks, not enough energy low libido, sluggish, wound up, down - so have decided to see if changing my eating habits can shift things a bit. I'm not overweigh 5ft5, 8st6lbs, (slightly on the heavy side for me), but would be pleased if I did loose a few pounds, trying not to make weight the focus. Have decided to take a vitamin pill with iron every day, last year had v low ferratin levels so had to take iron tablets for a while. I'm not promising to do well every day and cut out sugar completely as I feel that I would be destined to fail. However, I am going to try to I improve. Today have eaten:
1 pack of Belvita biscuits
1 Actvia extra creamy yoghurt
1 large apple
1 Danone (high protein yoghurt)
3 Oatcakes
Some cashew nuts
I am planning on sweet chilli chicken & rice (ready meal cause of money diet) with some stir fried veg for tea and plan to eat some red grapes afterwards. Also may have some sort of a treat on school run. Also aim is to replace the Belvita biscuits with oatcakes for breakfast and maybe eat them with some cheese. Know I'm not doing perfectly but I am making an effort. Buddies welcome.

Fuzzpig I think you are an inspiration.

Thanks for advice on 5:2, will go over to the thread, not under the illusion that I can eat what I want on the other 5 days, was thinking about eating in a similar way to how I have been eating most days now. Have bought two cartons of soup to eat tomorrow from Waitrose, have added up the total calories comes to 498. Plan to eat one for lunch and one for dinner. For dinner tonight had fewer chips than I would normally, have just eaten 2 oatcakes as was hungry, tbh has been an effort not to binge today.

I didn't have my best day food wise. I was out and about for most of it and didn't take anything with me so went without until I got in at 7 when I caved and grabbed beans in toast. Blush At least it's protein I suppose. I did have muesli with added seeds for breakfast and peanut butter on oatcakes for a snack. Also took my usual vitamins.

Loving the advice and discussion on this thread. Really interesting stuff.

Sleep we chatted earlier on this thread :)
I'm still battling so I'll chat any opportunity I get!

I like your earlier post about fulfilling spiritual needs and finding ways of getting 'back in our bodies'. I think I need to try to reconnect with myself and find ways of fulfilling myself which don't involve food.

Coumarin · 26/02/2014 21:54

Oh and an apple...

Are you eating enough protein octopus? I'm starving if I don't have it in some form at lunch then I want to binge.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/02/2014 22:03

My pimped up salad for today was- tuna, egg, halved miniature potatoes, green beans, black olives, lettuce, tomatoes and a olive oil and cider vinegar dressing.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 26/02/2014 22:04

Tbh I feel a bit bloated today after having potatoes, bread and hot x bun all in one day. Will cut back tomorrow as I don't like the feeling now.

Octopus37 · 27/02/2014 08:06

Usually I have enough protein, have been eating peanut butter on toast for breakfast. Was eating humus on toast for lunch, but have swopped to soup, the one I had yesterday was chicken and veg. Today I am having a soup with beans in for my lunch as part of the fast day. Have some form of protein as part of my tea.

Sleepwhenidie · 27/02/2014 11:22

Octopus the peanut butter is mostly fat - I think a bit more protein might help keep you feeling full longer - how much chicken was in your soup?

You didn't say whether you regard the chocolate etc as a proper treat (and really enjoy it as such) or if you think its more a feeling of craving sugar?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/02/2014 12:08

Is hummus 'healthy?' I'm confused about it, it has tons of oil in it.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/02/2014 12:09

I'm asking as I have some in the fridgeGrin

Beechview · 27/02/2014 12:10

Ive had a satsuma and 3 slices (from a small loaf) of peanut butter on toast this morning.
I know its not great but I don't eat eggs (unless they're an ingredient in something that doesn't taste eggy) or meat for breakfast.
I suppose the sensible thing would be yoghurt and fruit or something.
Or porridge.

For lunch, I've got a covent garden soup with chick peas and dinner is salmon with parsnip, carrot and potato mash.

If I can stick to that, I'll be happy.

Beechview · 27/02/2014 12:11

I think hummus is regarded as healthy generally.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/02/2014 12:20

I'm having liver for dinner mmmmGrin

Bramshott · 27/02/2014 12:39

I am currently in the process of pimping my cheese on toast!

End of the week, not much in the fridge, cheese on rye bread toast looking like the only lunch option, so thought I would roast some thinly-sliced squash and red pepper, with a few cumin seeds and chilli flakes, and put it on the bread under the cheese (did something similar last week with leftover chilli). I'll report back on whether it's nice or awful in about half an hour!

Octopus37 · 27/02/2014 12:40

I have just had Waitrose Mexican Bean soup for lunch was lovely. Fasting is a bit weird, but feel as if it is going to do the job.

Sounds goodGrin wish I could eat chilli and peppers but they make me throw upSad

I've just had tuna salad, halved new potatoes, green beans, black olives, salad and tomatoes and tinned tuna. Delicious!

Bramshott · 27/02/2014 13:12

Mmm - this is tasty. I have sort of squashed the squash and peppers down onto the bread so it's like a spread under the cheese.

No idea whether this is actually healthier than just having the cheese on toast on its own, but it's got to be more vitamin-rich hasn't it?!

Bramshott · 27/02/2014 13:12

Your tuna salad sounds pretty delish too - I love green beans in a salad!

fuzzpig · 27/02/2014 14:44

Yes definitely better bramshott as you've added veg. Sounds fab!

Rummikub · 27/02/2014 15:44

Hello everyone. Yesterday I had chickpeas, yoghurt and tamarind sauce for lunch. I made myself eat it before I went out. I didn't get the shakes! Are chick peas carbs or protein?

sleep I'm not bothered if I lose weight, I could do with being half a stone lighter, but my aim is to be healthier. My sleep is appalling, energy levels low, hair thin. Anxiety issues too. I think I do tea and toast as its quick and I really need/ want the caffeine. I have 2/3 cups of tea a day. I really don't put myself first, won't cook properly if its just me. I'm doing well if I moisturise! I insist my dc eat well.

Lots of useful info on this thread. I do like getting inspired by reading what others are eating. Tonight it's chicken and asparagus. How do I cook asparagus? Never cooked it before!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 27/02/2014 16:43

Chop the woody end off the asparagus then steam or boil it, not for long as it cooks quickly and it's nicer if it has a bit of a crunch.

Rummikub · 27/02/2014 17:05

Thank you dame. Under 5 min?

Beechview · 27/02/2014 17:38

How are you doing your chicken? I roast my asparagus sometimes. just chuck it on top of whatever is roasting for about 20 mins.

I had a packet of crisps today. I need to keep telling myself how crap they are and how they do me no good.

My skin is rubbish too. I keep meaning to do oil cleansing but as usual, I don't make time for it. I'm going to make an effort tonight.

fuzzpig · 27/02/2014 19:43

won't cook properly if its just me

Me too! In fact even when DH and I were home together (quite a lot before he started this job) we often didn't bother Blush

But that is definitely changing now! I'm doing some things that are only for me (eg the lentil thing, DH hates them) and some things that DH can take to work (eg leek and potato soup). It feels so good to actually be taking care of myself.
