would like some new ideas - picky partner!

I'm really fed up with having the same few meals all the time, I'm looking for some new ideas. However, I have an incredibly picky DP ...

He doesn't like onions, chicken on its own, any pasta sauce, garlic, tomatoes, any spices, cheese, salad, anything that sounds foreign etc.

i'm bored with our meals but can't think of anything exciting to cook that we both like!

What do you make now?

I do enchiladas, we are all quite fussy but we love them. We use turkey mince (can do pork or beef mince too). Fry 1 finely chopped pepper and 1 finely chopped onion in 1 tbsp oil until soft then add 250g turkey mince and fry until cooked through stirring frequently to break up the mince. Then mix through either red pesto, tomato puree and worcester sauce, bbq sauce, oyster sauce - any sauce of your choice works, enough to just loosen the mixture. Use to fill 3 tortilla wraps and roll them up then place in oven proof dish. Top with a few more spoons of sauce or grated cheese (not for your partner of course) and bake until tortillas start to brown.
My DH hates cheese and tomatoes and it's a real pain in the neck. I have recently been coating chicken strips in ruskoline crumbs with paprika or sesame seeds for extra flavour and he likes that.
Other ideas could be frying steak made into a stir fry with oyster sauce, spring onions and served with rice. Or frying steak cut into strips and dipped into cornflour then deep fried, it's like crispy shredded beef from the Chinese.
Steak pie, braising beef stewed with sliced onions and carrots and served with puff pastry.
Baked potatoes and toppings (tuna, beans, coleslaw)
Cous cous with roasted vegetables
fajitas in a non spicy seasoning
Meatballs in sweet and sour sauce
Shepherds pie
Cottage pie

We eat lots of chicken stir fry, jacket potatoes, sausage/steak pie, toad in the hole, wedges thing a like that.

The enchiladas sound nice but can't use pepper, garlic or tomatoes. Would a plain BBQ sauce work as well?

Pasta bake in cheese sauce is one of my faves but he won't eat pasta that's in a sauce. He doesn't like sweet and sour either or any Chinese curry.

Other ideas sound great, thanks :-)

It's just so frustrating he hates everything, I can't put onions in anything either which I love. i'd make separate meals if it wastn such a mess around!

I can't help, just sympathise as my DH is fussy too. He doesn't do pasta, rice, soup, vegetarian, tomato sauces, wholemeal, fruit, most treats and puddings. He wants to eat roast meat plus boring veggies ALL the time.

We manage day to day but even after 20 years of this it still upsets me that I can't share treats like an expensive box of choccies at Christmas when the kids are in bed with him, but have to sit there eating them on my own, which feels all wrong. At least it means I don't eat them much, probably healthier for me.

The kids are great, both eat most things, thank goodness. And are now getting old enough to enjoy occasional treats with me, food is such a social thing and it feels odd to eat by myself!

The enchiladas would work fine with a plain bbq sauce. The pepper I was meaning was a red or yellow vegetable type pepper, you could use any veg he tolerated really. i also use the mince part to serve ontop of nachos or plain tortillas.

If he is so picky, cant he cook?

IDismyname · 03/02/2014 21:40

Seafood risotto? Or risotto of any sort?

Salmon or cod baked in parcels?

Roasts?

Ragwort · 03/02/2014 21:51

What did he eat before you met him?

strawberryswing · 03/02/2014 23:03

He ate chips and processed chicken things like turkey drummers, pizzas, sausages etc.

We have a rule I cook he washes. If he cooked I'd wash up and its the job I hate doing most in the entire world :(.

Enchiladas sound nice, going to try them :-)
