Toad in the hole

I used to have a great toad in the hole recipe that worked well every time, but it has got lost somewhere and now no matter what recipe I'm using for the batter it never seems to work - I end up with tasteless almost spongey 'hole' that doesn't rise up around the sausages.

Help! What am I doing wrong?

I use the recipe from here. The recipe's at the bottom of the page:-

It's probably not the recipe, more that the oven and tin aren't hot enough.

My recipe cooks the sausages in a drop of oil for 10 mins at 200, then take them out whack oven up to 230 then put back in for five minutes then whip out fast and pour in batter and shut oven for 25 mins.

....and by cooking the sausages a little first the toad tastes of the sausages iykwim. You can also add sliced onion and sage leaves to the batter.
