If a recipe requires tikka masala paste what can I use instead?

I did my shop in Lidl today and the only think they didn't have was tikka masala paste. I was going to go to Asda tomorrow for the things I didn't get but as it is only one thing I would rather not.

The recipe is spicy sweet potato soup and it needs 2 tbsps. of the paste. What can I use as a substitute?

Thanks.

What have you got? Any other sort of curry paste? Curry powder, paprika, chilli powder?

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 01/02/2014 16:28

I don't have any curry paste but I do have lots and lots of dried herbs and spices. All 3 you mentioned plus cayenne pepper, Chinese five spice and mixed spice.

I would use some combinatioana of garam masala, cumin, ground coriander, turmeric and chilli powder).

Well, in fact I would use the tikka mix we have, but I'm guessing you wouldn't be asking if you had something like that :o

If it's paste you will also need very finely processed onions, garlic and ginger, as well as the spices I think.

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 01/02/2014 17:51

Right I have all of those spices. Would I use garlic clove or garlic puree?

Do I need to add a little oil to turn it into a paste?

Thank you for the replies.

Either if you use cloves crush them first. Yes some oil. Not olive, maybe veg.

Taffeta · 01/02/2014 18:08

You prob don't need loads of oil though as mushed up onion garlic and ginger give it a good consistency.

AmeliaToppingLovesShopping · 01/02/2014 18:49

I have onion and garlic but only ground ginger.

I only have olive oil or the 1 cal olive oil spray.

Don't worry about the ginger and just use a smidge of olive oil.

Thank you. I will try and make the paste tomorrow for the soup on Wednesday.

Do you know how long it would keep for?

The soup or the paste?

I think the paste would last for a good few days if you kept it in the fridge.

Let us know what spices you use and how it all works out. :)

Sorry I was talking about the paste.

I will make the soup for Tuesday or Wednesday and will update then.
