What can I continuously munch on without getting fat or bloated?

I feel like I want to eat ALL THE TIME at the moment. I know what you're all thinking, no I'm not pregnant! It's because I've recently given up smoking and have got my appetite back.

But I think it's just something kind of fidgetty to do instead of smoking too.

Anyway I'm just munching away all the time and I need some more ideas of healthy snacks to munch on so I don't put a lot of weight on as well.

I've been eating pots and pots of hummous with broccoli, green beans, carrots, breadsticks etc dunked in it.

I've been really uncomfortably bloated and it's been getting me down, which I realise is normal with eating all this veg but I don't know what to replace it with which is less bloating but won't make me get fat instead. I've already put on a bit of weight since stopping and I don't want any more! But it's better to be fat than to smoke, so I really need to just keep on with the munching as long as I don't start smoking again. What should I munch?

rice cakes, celery, gum...

MiconiumHappens · 25/01/2014 22:47

Water Mellon?

mrspremise · 25/01/2014 22:50

crunch ice cubes? I know itts not the same, but I had to be chewing something every waking hiur when i was pregnant. I hate the taste of chewing gum, so ice cubes became my thing. You can make them with squash or whatever for a change if you like Smile

Not something to eat, however I've been drinking peppermint tea, helped sooo much with bloating and getting rid quickly ... Maybe that would help

zizzo · 25/01/2014 22:57

Drinking will distract you/fill you up. I second the tea!

Helpyourself · 25/01/2014 23:11

Celery.
And drink unsweetened mint tea.

EatsFartsAndLeaves · 25/01/2014 23:11

I forgot I bought some teas to help with bloating last time I gave up! So that will help, ta.

I feel really fussy now cos I don't like celery or chewing gum, and my teeth are too sensitive for ice cubes.

Are rice cakes dry on their own? What could I spread on them? There are a few other cracker type things I like but I normally have them with cheese and I could eat my own weight in cheese every couple of days, so would have to find something very low fat to put on stuff like that.

I used to chew plastic when I was a kid!

Could try home made popcorn, either salty or a little bit of sugar?

WallyBantersJunkBox · 26/01/2014 03:55

The chickpeas are bloating you most likely.

Try carrot, celery and cucumber on their own, or make a dip with low fat natural yogurt or quark?

It's quite easy to make a tsatsiki at home.

Quodlibet · 26/01/2014 04:44

Houmous is quite calorific if you are eating pots of the stuff.

Lettucesnow · 26/01/2014 06:28

Distract yourself by doing something for at least half an hour before eating the thing you've promised yoursef. You might even have worked off a few calories aswell! Wink

Snowdown · 26/01/2014 06:44

You could try a raita dip made with yoghurt, mint, fresh coriander & chilli or fresh salsa - tomatoes, chilli, garlic, coriander, lime juice. Scoop with cucumber.
Mostly just wanted to say keep going, the weight issue can be tackled at a later date. I gained a stone giving up smoking 15 years ago but the weight did come off again, it was one of the hardest things I have ever done - and that is what stopped me from having one more cig - every day got easier but to have one more would have made all that pain pointless.

Crowler · 26/01/2014 06:54

Have you ever tried apple with peanut butter? We eat tons of these in our house. Delicious.

ItStillLooksLikeRainDear · 26/01/2014 07:01

Freeze some grapes and eat them from freezer. They are yum & take longer to eat.

mathanxiety · 26/01/2014 07:05

Fizzy water. You will feel full and the fizziness is nice. Imo.

antimatter · 26/01/2014 07:07

beef jerky, eggs (bolied or poached), roaster/cooked chicken breasts and any other protein would help to suppress your appetite
that is if you won't overdoo with carbs at the same time :)
carrot sticks, some people like cauliflower or broccoli raw but I don't like them

mrspremise · 26/01/2014 08:38

Ooooooh, frozen grapes sound lovely! rushes off to put some grapes in the freezer

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 26/01/2014 13:14

Easy peasy dip - natural yoghurt, a bit of mint sauce, a squeeze of lemon. Lovely with carrot and cucumber sticks (and pitta bread if you don't mind the carbs too).

Or soy sauce and a bit of chilli oil, with sugar snap peas.

Can wheat make you bloated? I thought pesto might make a good dip, but I'd want it on bread and I don't know if that might be bloaty. It would be wholemeal or maybe dense rye bread if I can get it.

Crudites is basically what I'm already munching on, I will eat broccoli, cauliflower, snaps, green beans etc forever as I love them, but those are the ones that I think make you bloat - beans are famously meant to make you fart, aren't they? I hadn't thought about the hummous being full of chickpeas, which are basically beans aren't they? So hummous is probably farty too :(

Do all raw vegetables do that or are there some I could switch to to minimise the bloat? I love peppers and carrots and cucumbers and baby sweetcorn and cherry tomatoes - do they all make you fart too?

Homemade popcorn is a great idea, I forgot I liked that! Going to make some now. Are there any other home made popcorn flavours apart from salt?

Veg that grow above the ground, especially the green ones are good and not too sweet.

Lettucesnow · 26/01/2014 19:27

I'm eating a pickled egg.

spilttheteaagain · 26/01/2014 19:28

Try the veg without the hummous and see if that solves the bloating. Will def aid the not getting fat!

Cucumber? Radishes? Cherry tomatoes?

spilttheteaagain · 26/01/2014 19:29

Lettuce? Baby spinach? Raw mushrooms (if you are like my weird DH and like them raw!)

Those all have basically no calories whatsoever.

VivienStanshall · 26/01/2014 19:32

Frozen raspberries and fruits of the forest, suck them like cold sweets.

Googled the trade-off with smoking and roughly (it can only ever be a punt) the health risks of 20 ciggies a day is the same as being 7 stone overweight.
