can anyone recommend a good curry cookbook?

my curries are rubbish. New Year's resolution is to get them up to scratch. TBH I am not all that bothered about true authenticity. Instead, I would like to make a Channa Masala that tastes just like the one from Saffron Express down the road.

we have several by Anjam Anand, a couple by Madhur Jaffrey and I got dh the Rick Stein India book for christmas and the couple of recipes we've had out of that were good too.

Indian curry? Madhur Jaffrey (we have her curry bible)
Thai? Thai Food and Cooking by Judy Bastyra and Becky Johnston

Definitely anjum anands "I love curry", my faves are chilli chicken balti, lamb dopiaza..if you google, you may find them online.

my favourite Anjum Anand recipe is the Pork Vindaloo (not the vindaloo we would normally think of as it is not super hot and spicy but is vinegary and very tasty - also like the crunch of the cashew nuts)

Ilovepowerhoop, I should have specified india (or pakistani) style curry. my thai curries already kick ass .

I swear by the Australian Wonem's Weekly one: I've done loads out of it - everything has been different, not difficult and delicious.

Miss Masala by Malika Basu - I have probably cooked 85% of the recipes in this book, they all work and are all GORGEOUS. I can't recommend this book enough

I like anjum anand's indian food made easy. Not too keen on malika bassu's miss masala, mainly because it is difficult to read. But yes try her online recipes.

If you don't mind low calorie stuff -check out the minimins site go to Slimming World recipes - there is a whole load of Indian recipes. Some of the posters are Asian.

Other than that I second any by Madhur Jaffrey and Anjam Anand.

I also had a small paperback from Kris Dhillon which was about Indian Restaraunt recipes.

My favourite though was by Rafi Fernandez but that was vegetarian, however she has written more books.

I have been to the library today and got The Hairy Bikers, and Anjum's New Indian, both of which look great. I'm going to have a browse over the week, and then get started cooking from them next weekend.

I didn't like Anjum Anand's book - bought it and sent it back.

I use the dvd Zahda's Kitchen by Zahda Saeed - only thing is that she hasn't transcribed her recipes 100%, so you need to watch the dvd and not just use the booklet eg she's forgotten to add the garam masala recipe to the chicken curry recipe.

Despite that, all her recipes are good - especially if you translate 1tsp salt as a pinch.
