Do you have a Chinese supermarket near you? You may find horseradish or daikon radish there.

Ask at a greengrocer's shop, they can almost certainly get it for you within a few days... While daikon radish looks very similar to horseradish, it is not the same, it really lacks the punch; only very lightly peppery (think watercress level of heat)

The recipe has horseradish in it. But now I'm thinking about it ds hates chilli so maybe I'll leave it out after all that!

(I'm thinking that he won't like the fiery taste)

For future reference, if you have a spare pot, grow some (keep it contained, though - it likes taking over the world given 1/4 of a chance)

Having grown it, though, take extreme care in grating it when very fresh - it's vicious.
