I've made this before with the Savoiardi biscuits soaked in coffee mixed with Marsala. No Marsala and can't face going out again just to get some. The only other alternative I have is brandy, but thinking that may be a bit overpowering for the dc's (only 5 and 4)? Coffee and vanilla maybe? Or just a drop of brandy? Ta.

I think if you cook off the alcohol from a couple of tablespoonfuls of brandy that would be fine. perhaps consider using some chocolate power dissolved in water and yes a touch of vanilla?

Thanks Madame. I have already made it and have used coffee with a bit of vanilla syrup (the type you make flavoured coffee with) and a small amount of brandy - didn't measure but maximum a dessert spoon in a mixture which has made up enough to serve 8. Will give the dc's a small taste if they fancy it, hopefully leaving more for me and dh!

That's a great idea to burn off the alcohol - will definitely try that next time. Have put grated dark choc in between each layer and on top. I also cheated by using ready-made proper custard, thick cream and mascarpone mixed up. I seem to have somewhat over-catered in the dairy department before Christmas (not sure why as only the 4 of us...)so trying to use up all the tubs in the fridge. Will report back Smile
