..simply because I've read of it in so many American novels (along with Twinkies and Lucky Charms and all sorts of weird and wonderful foods I've never tried...yes, I read a lot of Stephen King). And suddenly there it was, half price in Tesco. So I bought a jar.

God, it's vile.

i thought of buying it as an american friend raved on about it. shall not bother now, thank you

SoupDragon · 21/07/2006 20:27

What is it??

MrsBadger · 21/07/2006 20:28

is it in any way similar to Bird's Dream Topping?

Furball · 21/07/2006 20:30

Do Kraft actually make anything that is nice? and if not how come they are still in business?

marthamoo · 21/07/2006 20:32

It's like a cross between salad cream and mayonnaise - thick and white, in a jar like mayo. But it tastes more like salad cream - vinegary and artificial sweetener-y. Dh likes it, but then he likes salad cream (bleeeurrrgh).

I think Americans make things with it - cakes and stuff, but I may have made that up as I can't really imagine any cake made of it would taste anything other than vile.

have just googled it

got this

am now decidedly nauseated at the thought of using it in Pumpkin Snack Bars, Pink Fruit Freeze and an entire section of Leftover Turkey Recipes.

bleurgh

MrsBadger · 21/07/2006 21:00

also at the thought that it adds Tangy Zip (TM) as opposed to actual flavour...

Twiglett · 21/07/2006 21:01

American's also do cheese in a can

I used to love cheese in a can when in the states

you squirt it directly in your mouth .. pure plastic cheese

ooo I do like cheese

expatinscotland · 21/07/2006 21:02

i'm American and i hate ALL mayo. it's all disgusting.

Twiglett · 21/07/2006 21:03

its barely cheese to be fair .. but still ... genius

poisson · 21/07/2006 21:03

fluff have you ever had that?

expatinscotland · 21/07/2006 21:04

they also do this rank 'cheese food' called 'velveta' that comes in a block. hydrogenated oil+crap.

can't say i've ever heard of anyone using it in a cake.

it's mostly used as a sandwich spread or in a tuna or chicken salad.

expatinscotland · 21/07/2006 21:06

mmmmmmmm fluff! you make rice crispie treats w/that.

i make my own here b/c i can find Karo corn syrup in a shop owned by an american woman who has a spanish mother - and therefore, the EU nationality she needed to come here on her own.

NotAnOtter · 21/07/2006 21:08

mmmmmmmmmmmm dream topping

expatinscotland · 21/07/2006 21:10

wtf is dream topping?

if it is what i think it is, it's sold as 'cool whip' in the US - fake whipped creme.

SaintGeorge · 21/07/2006 21:12

A powder you mix with milk to make a fake cream type topping expat.

expatinscotland · 21/07/2006 21:16

yep, cool whip.

i used to pinch it from my gran's fridge. mmmmmm.

not as good a s fruit shoot, but close.

TinCan · 24/07/2006 09:53

Really...found Miracle Whip at Tesco?? My Dad was wanting some during his last visit, but I wasn't able to find it here. I'll have to look more thoroughly next time I'm at Tesco.
