Does anyone know if I can get a Scottish steak pie anywhere in London or the South East for Ne'erday? Left it too late to order online I think. Sad
Thanks!

My local butchers steak pie is ace with sausages in - place is full of Glasgow outcasts mind you :)

FannyFifer · 23/12/2013 21:39

I make mine slightly different.
I coat my diced steak in seasoned flour first then brown it, add finely diced onion then pour boiling water over & bring to boil again then simmer it forever, into dish, pastry lid then oven. YUM!

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 23/12/2013 21:42

In all my years I have nivver kent known of a steak pie with sausages in.
Are you sure it was a sausage, hen, and not the butcher's finger?

Mum2Fergus · 23/12/2013 22:07

I'm a Weegie originally but proxy Fifer for over 12 years now...never had a sausage in my steak pie in either continent!

I slow cook braising steak overnight with veg, then transfer to ashet with pastry just before serving.

PrimalLass · 24/12/2013 09:41

I'm a Fifer. My gran put sausages in stew but not steak pie.

I make it for NYD but add red wine and onion Bisto. Plus some diced celery, then cook the stew for about 4 hours. I can't do pastry so it is a square of ready rolled here.

Jbck · 24/12/2013 20:47

Sausages is for stew not steak pie.

I do sometimes do a bit of garlic and red wine though, but never a sausage.

MsUumellmahaye · 24/12/2013 21:31

some have sausage some don't, i like sausage in mine!!

cupcakeicing · 24/12/2013 21:50

Sausage in a steak pie, disgrace.

WitchOfEndor · 24/12/2013 22:04

Never heard of a sausage in a steak pie! OP have you tried M&S , they do them in Telford (because of all the Scots here) and they're no bad

mankyscotslass · 24/12/2013 22:17

We always had sausages in our steak pie on New Years Day.

The butcher in my home town says he is no longer able to sell them - so sells the steak pies sausageless - they are still lush but not the same.

Maybe the sausage in the steak pie is a regional thing? Family are all from The Port/Greenock/Gourock area?

wigglybeezer · 24/12/2013 22:25

Ah yes, PiffPaffPoff, the butcher in Dollar is a lovely man but the sausages in his pies are heinous. I secretly buy mine in Dunblane instead.

McFox · 24/12/2013 22:41

Must be a regional thing - my DH's weegie family love steak pie with sausage, but I'd never had it before I met him. It's not the done thing in Dundee! Smile

Twighlightsparkle · 24/12/2013 22:45

I spend my childhood hating steak pie, and only realised a few years ago, it doesn't always have sausages in it.

Yucky beef sausages, bleauch.

Morrisons here sell bells pastry, flaky rough puff.

lyndie · 01/01/2014 17:02

I just had to bump this thread to say that I had steak pie today at my in-laws and it had sausages in it! First time ever I've seen that (Fife).

SauvignonBlanche · 01/01/2014 17:22

I want a steak pie! Xmas Envy

WilsonFrickett · 01/01/2014 17:28

Oh ya dancer, steak pie for us tonight! No sausages though. That's just weird.

FannyFifer · 01/01/2014 17:47

Just had my homemade steak pie. Soooooooooo good!
Happy New Year to you all. Grin

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/01/2014 17:52

I've just finished cooking the filling for my steak pie - it has been casseroling for hours, and I've just thickened the gravy - and it tastes really good! However, I have bought puff pastry, so that bit will be cheaty, sorry.

Piffpaffpoff · 01/01/2014 20:54

My New Year Steak Pie was from the butchers in Dunfermline and it (a) was tremendous and, more importantly,(b) had nae sausages in it.

ClaimedByMe · 01/01/2014 20:59

We had steak pie from the butchers for tea minus the sausages, sausages in steak pie is criminal!

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 01/01/2014 21:10

My home made pie was delicious - and nae sausages here, either.

lyndie · 01/01/2014 22:06

Excellent work - didn't taste too bad even with the sausages! Also bought in Dunfermline! But I think I prefer it without!

Allinafankle · 02/01/2014 18:43

This thread has made me chuckle! Didn't help me track down a steak pie though Wink
We finally settled on one from Sainsburys which wasn't too bad, and most importantly was free from the devil food - slimy sausages. Yeeuch!
