Simple recipe ideas to go with rice please?

DS (aged 5) has suddenly taken a liking to rice over the last few weeks (normally his preference is pasta). I want to encourage this but my ideas for recipes using rice pretty much run out after chilli and curry (both of which he likes but it gets a bit boring).

He likes his rice plain where possible so ideas for other family meals with rice as a side dish would be great. Also thinking of trying some quite plain risottos but haven't a clue where to start. Help please!

DD2 used to love rice with some steamed vege (especially broccoli) plus soy sauce and a chopped up omelette on top.

Stew chicken (Caribbean)
Teriyaki chicken or teriyaki salmon
Lamb chops
Curry chicken
Thai green curry
Chicken wings with seasoned rice
You can have rice with pretty much any meat.

Roast meat goes well. We like chicken or lamb
Make fish cakes with it.
Stuffed peppers or other veggies
Rice, peas, sweetcorn and onion salad with ham

To make risotto, use a short grain risotto rice. Heat oil in pan, add the rice and stir for a few minutes add yiur chosen liquid (e.g. stock) a ladle at a time, stirring and addimg more as the liquid is absorbed.

Add vwggies (brocolli, leek, spring onions, peas work well, but there are loads of variations. We also like sweet potato or squash or spinach and garlic). Add some grated cheese and tour choice of meat or fish and serve with a green salad.

Thanks for the risotto recipe yegodsandlittlefishes. That's very helpful and sounds like exactly the kind of thing to move him on to.

tuna rice - couldn't be simpler:

to the cooked rice add

  • tin of tuna
  • cookec sweetcorn or peas ( or both)
  • garlic cream cheese
  • slosh of olive oil
  • seasoning, if needed.

mix and warm through - my kids love it!

another, even easier

  • cooked pieces of chicken
  • bolognese sauce
  • any cooked veg of your choice (chopped or grated)

mix, heat through, eat.

My DH loves rice so we have a rice cooker and make it alot. I often do chicken kebabs (marinade of sesame oil, tomato puree, soy sauce, honey and ginger)
chicken curry
chicken tikka
crispy shredded beef (thin slices of frying steak coated in egg white then cornflour then deep fried)
Fish or chicken goujons
chicken katsu (breaded chicken with curry or teriyaki sauce)
5 spice pork (pork fillet marinaded in golden syrup and 5 spice grilled
pulled pork
chicken wings
spring rolls
bbq ribs

Salt fish and akee, you don't need to put peas in the rice.

Lots of fish goes well, and most things with a sauce. Chicken in black bean sauce is easy - just buy a jar and follow the instructions.

Chicken in an orange or tomato sauce.

Lots of Italian and Spanish recipes go well with rice, and have you tried him with risotto.
