Gone off Golden Syrup

In the middle of making biscuits with the DCs and discovered the Golden Syrup was Best Before July 2011, and I think it had been opened previously. Too much of a faff to go out and get more, and DH thought it'd be fine.I scooped the required amount out into a clean bowl and it looked perfectly fine, however just as I was chucking rest of tin away, I noticed what looked like a bit of mould in the bottom of the tin. I rechecked the spoonfuls I'd scooped out and they looked fine. dH said to go ahead, so I did.

I've since got paranoia that I will have poisoned us all! Will it be OK, d'you think? Or will we spend Xmas with our head down the toilet??

I'm no expert so (disclaimer), but as long as it wasn't for anyone vulnerable (pregnant/very elderly/very young) then I'd use it. The amount of sugar should be enough to keep nasties away

it probably wasn't mould, it was probably crystallised sugar, I really wouldn't worry at all- enjoy your biscuits Xmas Smile

OK, thanks. We've made about 25 so would be a shame to chuck them. I need to stop being so paranoid!

It's pure sugar, unless contaminated with something else it would keep for years, though it might crystallise around the top a little.. I'd use it in a heartbeat!

I thought it was like honey, and didn't really go off? I'd have used it.

I've just checked the date on my golden syrup and its feb 2012.

I put some in rocky road last week and no one is dead.
