Is this normal for bread machine bread?

Or do I need a new machine?

My loaves always have quite a big hole in the bottom of the loaf where the blade/paddle thing has been. This extends quite high up the loaf.

Seeing as due to the shape of the bowl the loaves are quite high and not very long it kind of renders the middle third of the loaf useless.

All the slices in the middle have like a huge keyhole shaped hole in them.

Normal. You can avoid it by using the machine to make the dough but baking it in the oven.

Thats a good idea.

So I'd just use the dough setting and then how long would a 1.5lb loaf need in the oven?

Yes it's normal. I take the paddles out when the mixing phase is over. The I only have the small holes in the loaf from where the paddles fit over.

1.5lb loaf will probably need about 30-40 minutes, but best to leave if or 35 mins, then remove from the loaf pan and tap the bottom of the loaf. It you have a hollow sound, it is done. If not, pop it back in (not in the pan) for another 5 minutes or so.

Our Panasonic leaves a small hole and sometimes a slit.

simply means you have one some times two slices where the bottom half makes better kiddy 1/4 sandwiches, than adult 1/2 ones.

Not a problem

Ours does the same it's a real pita.
Will try removing the paddles next time; why have I never thought of that?!

I normally set the machine overnight but I'll do it in the evening today and try and take the paddle out at the right point.
