Someone had a half litre of what I can only assume was anti freeze.
The place was awash in Muller lite cartons and meat substitutes.

There was even a......

Soupy - we give peperami to our dog as an occasional treat. She is extremely addicted to them

oliveoil · 13/07/2006 10:47

Fruitshoots taste foul but I only drink water so find anything else too sweet Halo

dd1 and 2 like them with their McDonalds Happy Meals however

but they also eat asparagus and raw green beans (??)

I think you need a balance so they don't turn out odd and not know what a Cheese String or Haribo's are tbh

Marina · 13/07/2006 10:47

I agree about treats and lunchboxes, and portability of foods in Darth Maul rucksacks on superheated coaches. I will quite happily own up to packing a mix of peer-friendly treats and hopefully sustaining good stuff.
What is DragonBoy doing to his apple though? We normally manage to send one along successfully - bananas are out of the question though.
Actually Moondog, I am amazed your sensitivities were assaulted by all this at lunchtime. Whatever happened to the grand old tradition of consuming the lot before you got out of the school gates, and barfing it all back before you got to the motorway?

Cappucino · 13/07/2006 10:49

oh yes soup, pepperami and salami are just so healthy

them being processed meats which are chock-full of fat

but as a classic foreign delicacy for grown-ups they get the thumbs up from the Ocado mums

Marina · 13/07/2006 10:49

Am guessing FIS is trying to indicate the arbitrary nature of our food hobby-horses. I too will hand over peperami for picnics but not cheesestrings. Even though the latter have to be lower in fat and salt. It's illogical I know.

expatinscotland · 13/07/2006 10:55

Nothing like a Powerade slushy on a hot hillwalk. K, maybe not for kids, but the stuff is called Gatorade in the US and I'm warning you, don't drink it on an empty stomach whilst doing any intense cardio like hillwalking.

BUT, if you're planning to do some serious outdoor sport and it's going to be hot, get you a nice bottle of Powerade. Open it up and sip a bit out. Put the rest in the freezer and pop it into your rucksack before you head out.

When you get to the summit, or head back below treeline to enjoy a good lunch, you'll have a cold, slushy Powerade to quench your thirst.

Ahhhh. You'll be ever so grateful.

I used to buy Gatorade in powder form and add a scoop or two to my Nalgene bottle of water for flavour.

Tastes great!

foxinsocks · 13/07/2006 10:55

yes that's what I was trying to illustrate Marina!

Have you tasted cheesestrings soupy? I mean, why not just give them real cheese!

Pepperamis are indeed not fantastic nutritionally (5g of sat fat I think for a big one) but in my mind are passable for a disposable lunch. Not an 'everyday in your lunchbox event' but ok for trips where the lunch will be squashed on a non air-conditioned coach for an hour or so.

Marina · 13/07/2006 10:58

And I will hand over Babybels which are quite possibly round, flat cheesestrings with wax on

Marina · 13/07/2006 10:59

We had a bad experience with a triangle of goat's cheese once FIS, so we like our cheese safely packed and fairly 'ard.

foxinsocks · 13/07/2006 11:00

lol

at the thought of what a goat's cheese incident involves

themoon66 · 13/07/2006 11:00

Babybels are yummy. I put them in my lunchbox, not the kids.

Marina · 13/07/2006 11:02

Let's just say ds' schoolbag was bleating for at least a week...

aragon · 13/07/2006 11:03

Ah - that reminds me - must get some blue fizzy pop and microchips in for DS's tea.

Sadly - there is crap food out there and our children will eat it at some point or other (with or without our consent - bless). All you can do is grit your teeth and pray that they hate it when they do.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 12:16

foxinsocks, cheese strings taste of plastic. Absolutely. But re just cheese which makes them healthier than gibbons penises in a pack (ie peperami). And they don't look like gibbons penises

I dont have a problem with either of them on an occasional basis but wondered why you were so anti cheese strings but happy with whatever peperamis are made of.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 12:16

DS2 pestered me for cheesestrings. He usually eats mature cheddar and pronounced the foul. Until he realised how they peeled, then he loved them.

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 12:17

pronounced them "foul".

Enid · 13/07/2006 12:18

I have a thing about cheesestrings but allow peperami

complex isn't it?

Soupy, ds has complained that cheese-strings don't taste as nice as cheddar sticks etc but they are more "fun". Gggrrrr.

foxinsocks · 13/07/2006 12:22

I was just trying to point out, like marina said (so much better than me ), that most people have 'not so healthy' food that they tolerate and other 'not so healthy' food that they wouldn't, in a million years, be seen eating.

Tutter · 13/07/2006 12:28

fruitshoots do appear to turn normally pleasant kids into wild animals i have noticed

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 12:32

I barely bring myself to touch a peperami since someone on MN mentioned "gibbons' peninses"

Enid · 13/07/2006 12:32

they stink too

SoupDragon · 13/07/2006 12:33

Have you weaned DD3 onto peperami yet?

poisson · 13/07/2006 12:33
