I'm not a very good baker however I would like to try making a birthday cake for DHs birthday. We don't have much money being on mat leave so I thought it would be nice however I really don't know where to start. Any recipes that are guaranteed success? No preference on type of cake.

I've used this recipe loads of times. Don't bother with posh chocolate, I use tesco own brand plain choc at 30p a bar.
If you have small DC give them some sweets, sprinkles etc and let them decorate it. If not maybe something simple like a heart out of white chocolate buttons.

Can easily be covered in a thick layer of buttercream icing and decorated
