Got a ton of them in my veg box yesterday so made a broad bean salad last night.I had an inkling that I didn't like them but they were truly disgusting, look and taste like dead finger pads.....yeuch!

Anyone have a great recipe that disguises the consistency of them?

Never got on with them myself either. Just bitter and unpleasant whenever I've had them.

Feistybird · 05/07/2006 13:35

god no, broad beans the only vegetable I really dislike the texture and taste of. Have whizzed them into a pasta sauce tho' and we all ate it - couldn't taste them, it just thickened the sauce slightly.

I had some in my veg box last week and I'm not so keen on them so I cooked them lightly (microwaved) peeled the outer skins off, blended with lots of lemon juice, a clove of garlic and a little olive oil (a little like a pesto) and used as a pasta sauce with some cooked chicken and a little fried onion. It was delicious.

like the idea of whizzing into pasta sauce feistybird,I'll try that if more come next week.

peeling the outer skins off sounds a bit of a fag though sue ,do you really have to ?

I would try again without peeling skins off but I think the sauce would be much coarser. It wasn;t too bad once they're cooked - the outer skin becomes loose and wrinkly and because you're going to blend them the insides don't have to look pretty so you don;t need to be that careful. I pretty much cut them half open and scooped the insides out.

I love them.

DD takes forever to get the broad beans out when I give them to her to shell. Gives me ages to spend on MN instead of having to entertain her properly.

Riverford?

I thought they were vile. Fun to pod with dd, but beyond that virtually inedible. In the end I made a sort of hummus with them, following Riverford's recipe but adding at least double the amount of olive oil, cumin, paprika, garlic and salt. It's OK, but only dh and I will eat it - despite dd and ds being quite keen on ordinary hummus they won't touch it!

May Gran grows them in her garden and they are gorgeous I just treat them like a veg and steam them and then serve. But if you really don't like them you could curry them or put them in a veg chilli.

Sorry for the typo hands aren't working today!!!!

Are broad beans the same as green beans?

I love grean beans really mushy mixed with mash and covered in mint sauce - yum!

hub2dee · 05/07/2006 19:35

bbs are different, Tamba. green beans have itty bitty seed bits (soft) surrounded by long green fleshy body. Broad beans are like giant peas on steroids. They are hard. They come in a longish pod with a collection of brethren.

I'm throwing open the discussion on Palm Hearts . One could argue they trouce broad beans.
