Nigella the Domestic Goddess!!!!

Well, having watched Nigella on UK Style and read her books as well, the woman is a God send!

Here goes and this is a recipe I made up for myself based on Nigellas marinading in the bag.

4 Lamb Leg Steak
4 Tablespoons Garlic Infused Olive Oil
1 Onion
2 Carrots cut into batons
Brocolli (as much as you want to us)
2 Tomatoes quartered
1 yellow pepper
Pinch of salt and pepper

Put everything into a food bag that seals shut, and put in fridge it tastes better if done the day before, but is ok if done in morning.

Empty the contents of the bag into a frying pan or wok and cook until the lamb is starting to colour on both sides. remove lamb and put in an oven proof dish and cook in hot oven for 15 minutes until the veggies etc are cooked in the frying pan/wok.

Serve with boiled or mashed tatties, and of course large glass of red wine!! it must be good even the kids ate it!!.

An alternative for vegetarians is to add the tatties instead of meat and any other vegetable of their choice.

Nigel Rules doesn't he? Usually 6 ingredients max. Always do (well not always) his chicken with garlic and lemon and the sausage with cider and juniper berries.

But, but, but, think Gary Rhodes is great. I know he looks and talks like a tosser but his recipes work really well

bossykate · 21/11/2003 22:07

i've done the clementine cake too. very good. i'm not totally convinced by nigella, although a couple of her recipes from how to eat have become staples in our house. as others have said, she isn't totally reliable, which makes you wonder how well tested the recipes have been. i like nigel slater too. and have been meaning to get claudia roden's middle eastern cookery books for a long while... well, christmas is coming up!

bossykate · 21/11/2003 22:09

ps - i know elizabeth david is completely revered, but isn't her work terribly dated?

suzywong · 21/11/2003 22:10

I thnk Gary Rhodes can't really help himself form poncing up his recipes and the titles of the dishes are over egging of the worst kind.
I read in the Observer Food monthly that Nigel Slater went on a diet last year, ate mainlyfruit and kept a list of everysingle item and its quantity that he consumed.

popsycal · 21/11/2003 22:11

i agree that nigel slater is the best,,,can;t remember who i am agreeing with tho
sorry just skim read this thread

WideWebWitch · 22/11/2003 08:11

Nigel Slater wrote about his diet in The Observer and wasn't trying to lose weight IIRC but wanted to get his cholestorol levels down I think. I agree, he's fab and I don't think I've ever cooked a duff recipe of his. Nigella OTOH, IKWYM bossykate, she does just miss sometimes doesn't she? I really love How To Eat but agree, the others aren't as good. I didn't even buy Nigella Bites, just got it out of the library and I'm glad I didn't spend the money really since there wasn't anything in there that desperately made me want to cook it. Forever Summer does have a few good recipes but also some very irritating ones, i.e. Slut Red Raspberries in Chardonnay Jelly - yes, I've made it but the title irritated me so much I nearly didn't! Yes bk, E DAvid is a bit dated but great to read from a food history point of view as much as anything else. I've only made tapenade from French Provincial Cooking but I use it as a relaxing read rather than a recipe book. I've just opened my copy at random and came across "Oeufs en gelee a l'estragon," hmm, eggs in tarragon flavoured jelly, which certainly dates it!

Sorry, cholesterol.

Thank you Slatter-holics. Dh phoned to say he would be late in tonight and I nearly asked him to bring a takeaway in, but remembered I had some chicken in the fridge that needed using so got out "30 min cook" (prev rotting on the shelf) and made garlic/wine/lemon roast chicken-Yum. Think the format had put me off before, I like books where recipes are recipes IYSWIM
