Nigella the Domestic Goddess!!!!

Well, having watched Nigella on UK Style and read her books as well, the woman is a God send!

Here goes and this is a recipe I made up for myself based on Nigellas marinading in the bag.

4 Lamb Leg Steak
4 Tablespoons Garlic Infused Olive Oil
1 Onion
2 Carrots cut into batons
Brocolli (as much as you want to us)
2 Tomatoes quartered
1 yellow pepper
Pinch of salt and pepper

Put everything into a food bag that seals shut, and put in fridge it tastes better if done the day before, but is ok if done in morning.

Empty the contents of the bag into a frying pan or wok and cook until the lamb is starting to colour on both sides. remove lamb and put in an oven proof dish and cook in hot oven for 15 minutes until the veggies etc are cooked in the frying pan/wok.

Serve with boiled or mashed tatties, and of course large glass of red wine!! it must be good even the kids ate it!!.

An alternative for vegetarians is to add the tatties instead of meat and any other vegetable of their choice.

I've made Nigella's Clementine cake a couple of times - it's useful for people who are dairy/wheat intolerant (but a disaster for nut allergies) - and I love it. Keep meaning to try the Roden one which I think just uses oranges, to compare the two.
Re the rhubarb recipes, suzywong, I tried the rhubarb tarte tatin and it was very claggy, so you could be right.

I just googled (I am (a) sad (b) putting off work) and Charles Saatchi was born in Iraq.

Is this relevant?

lazyeye · 19/11/2003 14:04

I quite liked Nigella even though I was always aware she didn't live on planet reality, however, not so sure now I spotted her new cookware range in John Lewis. £30 for a bleedin tea cup..who you trying to kid love.

Did try her Cheese & onion pies once and they were pretty scrummy.....

WideWebWitch · 19/11/2003 14:05

Ks I love reading Elizabeth David for fun too though I've never actually cooked anything of hers. I've got French Provincial Cooking, also from a second hand shop.

I've ordered the most expensive breadbin in the world from her new range - actually not the £120 one (!!). I feel a bit of a mug.

suzywong · 19/11/2003 14:15

aloha - you'd better be keeping something other than Kingsmill in it for that price

lazyeye · 19/11/2003 14:18

For that price, I'd expect to be able to wear it as well. I'm just jealous Yes, it'll have to be caramalised onion bread with sun dried tomatoes won't it??

bettys · 19/11/2003 14:22

Ks I think we must have identical cookery bookshelves as I've also got Elizabeth David's 'An Omelette ...' etc. The only thing I've made of hers though is Summer Pudding - delicious. A classic book.

motherinferior · 19/11/2003 15:03

And I STILL made that chocolate cake last w/end and it was great (and so easy) AGAIN.

janh · 19/11/2003 15:06

ks, I've just whizzed through this thread (not really a foodie person) and had to say I just loved your description of Nigella chatting to dear George and the consequences - made me LOL! Thank you!

Blu · 19/11/2003 15:33

LOL KS, Brilliant!
MI :Iraq! I am speechless!

aloha · 19/11/2003 16:17

Maybe the Iraq thing is maybe linked to Saatchi's family being very anti Saddam??? If it's pure coincidence it's a big coincidence.

marialuisa · 19/11/2003 16:23

Think the Saatchis are Sephardi Jews who had to make their escape.

Marina · 19/11/2003 20:08

ks!
I'm still a Nigella virgin but we love and revere Claudia Roden and Elizabeth David in our house. E David does a scrummy treat pasta sauce of chopped chicken livers, lemon, garlic, chopped pancetta and lightly cooked egg. It is DELICIOUS.
I must try some Nigella recipes, I just never seem to get round to it . On a day to day basis we're more Nigel Slater cooks...

princesspeahead · 19/11/2003 20:14

marina, IO'm a nigel slater fan too, but I must say I cook more and more out of how to eat. there are some really excellent recipes in there. try her greek lamb stew which is delicious (you cook macaroni in it so it is a one-pot dish that children will eat as well) and for a cake which is almost identical to the clementine one but without the faff of boiling clementines, try her almond and orange blossom cake. very good!

Twink · 20/11/2003 15:23

ks are you out there at the moment ? Probably not as it's it's school finishing time..

I've just made the clementine cake for the first time, I had to put foil over after 30 mins and is appears to be cooked after 45, is this likely ? I know my oven is unreliable but 25% less time seems a lot.

motherinferior · 21/11/2003 15:00

Nigel S is God in our atheist house.

scampadoodle · 21/11/2003 15:44

Nigel Slater is great, yes. Everything I've made from Appetite is good - the garlic-y chicken is so easy & yummy. Also the cheat's trifle. What I like about both him & Nigella is that they're really greedy...

Oh thanks ks, you've put my mind at rest!

I don't know what it's like, as after your recommendation, I decided to make it for the pre-school fair this weekend, hence the panic. It looks lovely and yoshy (not sure if that's a real word but our family use it to mean gooey, rich and yummy combined)

I've only done her savoury recipes previously and found all the 'goddess' ones I did yesterday needed a bit of guesswork. I guess I've got too used to Delia !

Anyway, back to Nigel for tonight's dinner, he's fab and the only reason I buy The Observer !

Nigel Slater is king as far as dp goes and I rather love him too - especially the spicy sausage and mustard pasta sauce from Real Cooking - its my ultimate comfort food meal. I do like Nigella, but only How To Eat, and my new fave is Tamasin Day Lewis. I also cook a lot from Claudia Roden and Elizabeth David. I have also just bought Diva Cooking by Victoria Blashford Snell as she is fab and doing the catering at my wedding so I am giving her a plug here!

The worst cookery book I ever bought was a Gary Rhodes one - really fussy and not nice at all.
