We are moving soon and it will take 2-3 weeks for appliances to be sorted. We will have oven or hob for this time. Will not have a fridge either but have managed to salvage a camping fridge which should keep milk, butter etc. Aaahhhh! Anyone have any tried and tested crock pot /microwave ideas, please?

When we were having our kitchen done we did resort to ready meals a lot, but one thing we realised that you might find useful is that you can make couscous with a kettle (just pour on boiling water and leave 5 mins) so we had that instead of rice.

Baked spuds in the micro with a tasty chilli/stew? In fact spuds can go in the crockpot with the meat and veg anyway!

A microwave is more versatile than you may think. Look at Lakeland/Betterware for the things they try to sell you to cook in the microwave and then just buy them at the pound shop. I've got a bacon grill thing that's brilliant as you don't need to add oil and it still crisps up. Scrambled eggs/omlettes are also possible. Don't forget you can also do fish with a little water/oil to give a steamed effect. All veg now have instructions for cooking in the microwave although if you don't have large fridge/freezer the tinned ones might be easier? cakes also work. Use a large bowl. Cover the bottom with a thick layer of golden syrup and put a ordinary cake mix on top. Cook in microwave for approximately 10 minutes. It's our favourite quick pudding.

Instant rice - comes in a pouch, cooks in microwave - is great for times like this. Pasta can also be cooked in a microwave (pour on boiling water, microwave every so often, then just leave semi-covered).

Also, takeaways...

Thinking about it, when my parents were in a similar position, we lent them our camping stove - do you know anyone you could borrow one from?

DropYourSword · 28/09/2013 06:47

Could you get a little camping gas side so at least you cook cook things in a pan too?

DropYourSword · 28/09/2013 06:47

Bah, stove not side.

When I was without a cooker for 3 months I got a veg steamer that went in the microwave, it didn't cost much. Plus I had a George Foreman grill so quite often did grilled meat, microwave rice and microwaved steamed veg.
Other meals you can do are soup with bread and salad. Pizza- put it on an upside down plate and it holds it shape better and doesn't get a soggy base- according to some student friends. If you like veggie food you can cook quorn in the microwave.

Easy peasy!

Spag bol
Chili
Whole gammon
Whole chicken
Curry
Stew
Rice pudding
Lasagne

Can all be done in the SC

We had to do this for 3 weeks. But we had a toaster as well. It is worth it.

I bought a magnificent book called 1000 microwave recipes. You could prob get for 5 p on abe books. Everything is possible except poached eggs, afair.. Bit just has to be more sequenced.

If you have a toaster and get those toast pockets you can have cheese on toast as well.

valiumredhead · 28/09/2013 14:53

I have a poached egg microwave thingyGrin
