100th birthday cake - help and suggestions gratefully received!

My lovely grandad will be 100 in a few weeks time and we're planning a family party. I enjoy baking and have offered to make the cake. I'm struggling to decide what to make though! I thought of making 3 number cakes in the shape of 100 - probably by cutting them freehand rather than hiring tins. I also thought I'd make each of the 3 cakes different - perhaps a fruit cake, a lemon one and a chocolate one. I quite often bake sponge cakes, but as these will be shaped, I'm presuming it's best to use just one whole cake, rather than try to sandwich them? If so, any suggestions for the best recipes to use? Am open to other flavour suggestions too. There will be 4 generations at the party, so would like to cater to different tastes. And finally, the one thing I've never made before is fruit cake, as I personally don't like it, so any recipe suggestions would be great! Also I could do with ideas on how to decorate them too! Thanks in advance.

I'm sure someone will be along with some good cake recipes but in terms of the decorating maybe you could use white roll out fondant (as that certainly goes with both fruit cake and plain sponge). It would then look really smart and you could embelish with their writing with your grandad's name or something liek silver balls?

Have you seen the silicone photo frame mould you can buy to use with fondant? They're easy to use & you could maybe get some pics of your grandad over the years & put them in frames over the cake.

Nothing to add cake wise but how wonderful that he will be 100 and that you'll have 4 generations there.

Thanks for your suggestions. Fondant icing is a good idea. I'll look into the photo frame moulds - hadn't heard of this before. Any suggestions for the best fruit cake recipe?

I just noticed I have an errant 'their' in my last post, whoops.

This www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/2564/easy-apple-fruit-cake has very good reviews but it's not 'traditional' as such

Delias Christmas cake recipe is pretty good.
