Storing fruit and veg

Cleaning out fridge and cupboards. Just read that veg shouldn't be stored near apples due to gas produced by them causing other items to ripen. I keep most fruit in one drawer of the fridge, salad stuff and veg in the other.

What veg can be left out at room temperature (I read that tomatoes should be - first time to hear this)? Potatoes and onions are kept in veg trolley, anything else that could go there instead of fridge?

Thanks

I thought it was bananas that gave off that gas?

Tomatoes are much nicer not kept in the fridge.
