What to have with soup

Just had first soup of the season with a 'fresh' roll from Tesco - the bread was very disappointing. I don't have time to make home made rolls, anyone got any suggestions for what to have with soup instead of bread.

Was going to suggest homemade croutons... but they're bread, aren't they Blush

Cheese scones?

Aaand evidently I felt the need to advertise my stupidity twice.

Cheese scones would be an excellent call if I could be trusted not to eat 10 in a sitting! Grin

Bread machine bread, sliced thick. Admittedly its bread, but its hardly any work and nicer than the stuff from the supermarket.

Cheese scones

Tiger bread is of course bread but it is bloomin' lovely bread

Cornbread

Also bread but nice - get pitta breads and slather them with garlic butter, herbs, maybe chilli and bake

Little savoury muffin thingies

Homemade croutons could work actually - toasting improves mediocre breadSmile

Pitta bread suggestion sounds great! It's supermarket bread that I seem to have lost the taste for. It's a shame as the soup was really tasty, and the roll looked great but was just meh.

Home-bake baguettes or rolls? Even crappy bread tastes good still warm from the oven. they do nice seeded rolls in tesco too.

englishteacher78 · 11/09/2013 19:58

It was a seeded roll I got. It looked lovely. So disappointedHmm

Those Jacobs seeded flatbread crackers are gorgeous.

mrspremise · 11/09/2013 20:39

sausage rolls Wink

LegoAcupuncture · 11/09/2013 20:41

Cornish wafer crackers are delicious with soup.

iklboo · 11/09/2013 20:48

Sort of bread, but a cheese toastie with mustard. Especially with tomato soup.

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 11/09/2013 20:59

The 'fresh' bakery rolls are often stale by the time you get them home, but they do seeded home-bake rolls.

Floury potatoes on a dish beside soup, spoonful of spud dunked in soup, delicious :) I also do gnocchi sometimes.

Ryvita for a bit of crunch, and something to keep your mouth busy.

This Irish soda bread from BBC Good Food is so quick to make and very very tasty. I halve the recipe and it still makes loads! Soda bread MUST be eaten fresh as possible though, preferably still warm from the oven smothered in butter! Tastes fantastic with soup. This particular recipe is rustic and wholesome, so very good!
