Any ideas for a starter and a main course. Want to do as much prep beforehand.

Got pud sussed - wheat free chocolate almond cake with mascarpone cheese and an orange reduction (always wanted to serve a "reduction"!!)

how formal a party is it?

Formal-ish. They're a bit foodie but also DH and I like cooking but have got bugger all time to do it this weekend!

I'd go with a salad to start - something that can be knocked together fast but still look and taste good - like rocket, with fresh figs, prosciutto and goats cheese. it would take five mins to throw together. I'd serve it on a big platter and maybe have some crusty bread on the side.

For the main I would say lamb shanks - there are lots of different ways to do them but I personally love the recipe in the River Cafe Cookbook where you basically just slow cook lamshanks with red onions and red wine. You can put it on hours in advance and just take out and serve when ready. You could serve it with some parsnip mash (that you could make in advance and just reheat) and some green veg.

Your pud sounds divine
