Fruit Shoots, cheese strings, those cartons of 'meat'(sorry, industrial slurry) and cheese, weird yoghurts that don't need to be refrigerated and have a 'best before' date of 2018.
The healthiest thing was probably a plastic bread sandwich with some sort of processed chicken slice in it.

When I see their little shining faces and strong bodies, exuding energy ,and then see what they are fuelling themselves with,I want to take said cheese strings and garotte their parents.

I've only read your first post moondog but
a) I agree with you and
b) can I assume from the number of posts that this has kicked off? and
c) I bet all the Dairylea feeding mums have swallowed the 'there's no bad food, all food is ok in moderation' line from the processed food industry to which I'd say, er, hydrogenated fat is good for whom, exactly? and
d) wonder if I've got time to read this thread?
Hmmm!

Theshrimp, same as PeachyClair - we get hyper, ADHD-type behaviour. He also reacts to lots of more obvious 'nasty' stuff. He is loads better now after 2 years of avoiding high salicylate stuff most of the time.

moondog · 20/06/2006 20:32

what is this salicylite stuff?
I wouldn't give a kid low fat anything.

WWW, I can't speak for all Dairylea feeding mums but when I give my sons processed food, the line 'there's no bad food, all food is ok in moderation' is not something I have got from the processed food industry.

I refuse to buy Dairlylea Lunchables as they are expensive and I don't believe they are a nutritional subsititute for a normal packed lunch, but I have nothing against the odd cheese triangle or dipper.

It's not the food industry that's convinced me they are ok. I grew up eating Dairylea, just as I grew up eating cheddar cheese and cottage cheese. I also grew up with the belief that most things are fine in moderation, long before I took any interest in food advertising.

Pasta salad is a horrible invention. Nigel Slater will not eat pasta salad, he said so last week. Wholemeal pasta is an even more horrible invention, and a bizarre version of an original food which was not meant to feel like shredded sandpaper.
And as for low-fat mayo...

I honestly think it is verging on neurotic to monitor biscuits to 'one on a Friday' - how relaxing an attitude to food is that? A french or Italian family would think we were mad.

I don't buy cheese strings etc because of the enormous cost and a taste and texture which is inferior to real cheese. But I'm certainly not going anywhere near wholemael pasta, either!

singersgirl · 21/06/2006 10:15

Blu, agree about wholemeal pasta. How disgusting is it! We have enough wholemeal/fibre in our diet from other things like bread, vegetables and sometimes pulses (lentil soup, beans in shepherd's pie etc).

Because of DS1's issues, the things I really have a problem with are over processed stuff. My children have some sweet things every day - plain biscuits, home-made cakes, honey and maple syrup, vanilla yoghurts, plain vanilla ice-cream, pancakes and waffles. They just don't have brightly coloured things and things stuffed with ingredients I don't have in my kitchen cupboard. If I don't recognise an ingredient, it makes me suspicious on behalf of DS1.

Salicylates are natural food chemicals that occur in most fruit and vegetables; they are a way of preventing animals eating the stuff before it is ripe and are higher in unripe and brightly coloured things as a rule. Aspirin is salycilic acid and should be avoided by those sensitive to salicylates.

Low salicylate fruit is peeled pear, veg include cabbage, leeks, green beans, potatoes, swede, peas, garlic, spring onions, beansprouts....

noddyholder · 21/06/2006 10:17

I think most of the people on here who are gestapo like about food are only able to get away with it because they know we will never see them or what they eat/feed their kids so they can be as holy as they like and all impress each other whilst actually eating the same sh**te as the rest of us!

Blu · 21/06/2006 10:26

Children shouldn't eat an over-fibrous diet, anyway.

SleepyJess · 21/06/2006 10:27

LOL Noddy. I agree. I expect some really are holier than thou.. but that's their problem! The rest of us a human..

Greensleeves · 21/06/2006 10:48

I like wholemeal pasta. I think it tastes nicer than white stuff.

WelshBoris · 21/06/2006 10:49

youre such a liar greeny so holier than thou

moondog · 21/06/2006 10:52

I like brown pasta although arguably not to be considered the same as white pasta.

With a sauce of fetta, griddles courgettes, capers, lemon and thyme or one of tomatoes, capers, peppers, eggplant, olives and chillies.
