Recipe asks for Baking Soda, I have Baking Powder...is this the same?

Isn't baking soda the same as bicarbonate of soda?

Baking powder is baking soda with cream of tartar, they are different

They are not the same.

Well according to my cook book they are the same one is the American version bicarbonate of soda is something different.

I always thought Baking Soda is Bicarb and Baking Powder has cream of Tartar added, exactly as ginmakesitallok says.

Maybe the books wrong.......

The book is wrong as some of my recipes call for both.

So to clarify no I can't use the baking powder I need bicarb of soda?

No you have to get baking soda which is normally labeled bicarbonate of soda :).
