(small) maggot in it???? Part of me thinks 'UGH' and another part says it's well washed and stir-frying will kill off anything else!

What's the Mumsnet vote?

yes. wash it off obviously.

maggots are v common in broccolli - I usually saok mine just in case.

Aero · 18/06/2006 15:40

Doubt it'll do you any harm - just cut off the bit which had the offending creature in it and fry away. Having said that, not sure I'd eat it. Grin

lahdeedah · 18/06/2006 15:43

Yes - wash it well and it will be fine. The only problem is when this happened to me I couldn't stop thinking about the maggot and it turned my stomach!! Try to block it out of your mind!!

motherinferior · 18/06/2006 15:46

Depends if you're vegetarian.

Aero · 18/06/2006 15:47

lahdeedah - that's what I was thinking too. Ewww.

spidermama · 18/06/2006 16:30

I think it's a good advert for the brocolli. It means it hasn't got nasty pesticides.

spidermama · 18/06/2006 16:31

Actually in all honesty I might have trouble blocking it out, but I'd happily feed it to others who hadn't seen the maggot. Grin

TooTicky · 18/06/2006 16:59

spidermama, you're a woman after my own heart! After all, you wouldn't give it to them if there really was a problem. It's like trying to get the children to be completely blase (how do you get an accent on an e?) about brown bits in bananas without letting on that they turn my stomach...

Millie1 · 18/06/2006 17:38

I couldn't do it ... was all geared up but went back to re-examine it and found another tiny maggot so even though it had had a good wash heaven knows how many babies were crawling around. UGH!

SenoraPostrophe .... does soaking it make them float out and up IYKWIM?

Dd spotted a caterpillar curled up in her brocolli a few weeks ago. Beautifully preserved through steaming! She shared the story at show and tell at school (even though grandma had shown her a nestful of baby birds that weekend!). I am grateful the creature was found in the last mouthful of brocolli found on anyone's plate Grin.

schneebly · 18/06/2006 18:15

I wouldn't personally but am v. squeamish wimp!

SSSandy · 18/06/2006 18:26

There may be other smaller maggots in there...

Mercy · 18/06/2006 18:37

Maggot - no

Caterpillar or fly etc - yes

Marne · 18/06/2006 18:41

I would give it to dh and the kids and just say there was't enough for yourself Grin

moondog · 18/06/2006 19:10

I would worry more about what I hadn't seen (ie disgruntled staff spitting/wanking into ready prepared or restaurnat food) than an innocent insect.
