best (widely available) miso soup?

Does anyone have a favourite miso soup brand? I've tried the Sainsburys one and I wasn't very impressed. Is it worth popping into waitrose if I am passing - does anyone know if theirs is better?

Are there other brands that I have missed? Maybe I am just making it wrong - should I be adding things to it?

Any advice from miso experts is very much appreciated!!!

Sorry, it's just miso paste and water. If you want it fancier, you can add a bit of stock (or dashi granules if you have them), soy sauce, spring onion.

Oh forgot to say, if you are looking in the supermarkets, clearspring does them. Ocado has it, so I assume waitrose will stock them too. Empty the sachet into a jar and stick it into the freezer. The paste doesn't freeze and lasts forever.

All the powdered miso soups are disgusting, IMO (lived in Japan for 11 years, so maybe I'm fussy). Either make it yourself with real miso, or track down packets which come with sachets of real miso - my local Chinese supermarket has them, or you can order from The Japan Centre in London - the £3.24 Hikari brand packs are good.

I like the jar of clearspring miso. I think I got it in sainsburys or Holland and Barrett.

I've bought the Clearspring miso soup from Sainsbury's before, in their world food bit.

I really liked it but would seem to be a philistine

exexpat glad to hear Hikari is considered good! I buy www.japancentre.com/items/hikari-white-miso-medium-sweet-shinshu-miso-kome-koshi/quickview
in our local chinese market.

These are the pastes I'm referring to that clearspring does

I've not had them. But I think the powered stuff is really disgusting as well. And miso so basically stock + paste + water.

good question. i used to live in camden and would buy a hot tub of miso soup on the market on a saturday morning. i miss it.

I use the Clearspring paste, or risk a packet of something I can't read in Atari-Ya or Arigato in Soho.
