tips on cleaning mushrooms

hello...

just spent bloody ages cleaning shrooms for a carbonara sauce and wondered if there was an easier way other than painstakingly wiping the crap off with kitchen towel?

preferably some magical way in which you just look at them and they instantly become chopped and clean?

please please please please please tell me there's a way...

Sorry, kitchen towel is the only way to go. Don't be tempted to wash them in water because they absorb a lot of water and will taste vile.

Just a quick wipe over with kitchen towel shouldn't take too long though.

you could just not clean them

that's what I do

(now none of my MN friends will eat dinner at mine again...)

i just peel the top skin off and chop a bit off the bottom then run them under water. Smile or maybe Blush

emkana · 11/06/2006 20:42

Ooops

I always wash them Blush

nicnack2 · 11/06/2006 20:47

that would be why frozen mushrooms once derosted are foul! wont be washing them again.

warthog · 11/06/2006 20:48

yeah www i've found the same - if i wash them and fry then they go all liquidy and refuse to brown. nn and em, how do you get them to brown then?

lol tassis - do you ever get a mouthful of manure?

I peel and wash them. Didn't know you weren't supposed to wash them Shock

tassis · 11/06/2006 20:49

no warthog, you just have to flick any mudy bits off.

easy!

nicnack2 · 11/06/2006 20:51

warthog. TBH i dont think i have ever noticed if my mushrooms have brownedBlushBlush.

warthog · 11/06/2006 20:51

hmmm may try pick and flick method then.

took me about 10 mins this evening to clean a tray - not a long time in the grand scheme of things, but always looking for easier ways...
