Help Picnic tomorrow is hot weather - suggestions?

We are visiting our county show tomorrow, weather is yet again going to be boiling hot.

Taking a picnic which we will have to carry around with us, have got ice packs but not enough room to keep everything cool.

What food suggestions that won't get spoilt (ie meat going off and poisoning us lol) that we can take?

Thanks

Put all your drinks in the freezer tonight, then they will keep your food cool, and not be too warm to drink!

Do you have a cool bag/box If so most things will keep ok in that for a day easily esp if you have freezer blocks or as Jasnem says frozen drinks.

Failing that tins of tuna, a tin opener and an unopened jar of mayo are good along with salad

We do have use of a coolbox but don't fancy carrying all the time with two children to keep track of! Too far to walk back to the car midday as well. Hoping to jam everything under the pushchair!

Frozen drinks is a fab idea!

How about freezing smoked salmon and take it out in the morning. It should be defrosted by lunch time in this heat.

How about hummous? should be fine esp if next to frozen drink.

Lots of fruit is good too.

thats the problem with coolboxes they are way to unwieldy.

Sorry to hijack but we are also having a picnic tomorrow! Can you freeze fizzy drink without it exploding or losing its fizz?

wangle99 · 09/06/2006 21:13

Pegasus - I know if you add fizz to jelly it stays fizzy so should be a bit fizzy if frozen? To freeze you need to let some of the contents out (it expands as freezing) and let some of the air out so as it expands it has something to expand into.

We've frozen loads of water, should keep food cold, did pittas with salad and little bit of meat, hummous etc.

Thanks!

You can get little soft ice blocks in Lakeland which are good for lunch boxes.

If you go to Legoland don't take a big cool box and hope that you can leave it in the lockers. We made this mistake and had to take it back to the car as it wouldn't fit into the lockers as they are teeny. We took the picnic in carrier bags with cool blocks the next time.

Use frozen slices of bread to make the sandwiches...... they're easy to spread butter on too Smile.
