Can cookie cutters be used with any recipe?

I am a very inexperienced baker so this might be a stupid question.

DS needs to make biscuits at home to bring in as part of his homework.

Can cookie cutters be used with any biscuit recipe or do they only work with certain types of biscuits?!

They work best with unlumpy biscuits eg, gingerbread men, shortbread. If the recipe has lots of nuts, raisins, choc chips etc in the cutters will not give straight edges. There's a very easy gingerbread man recipe on.the CBeebies website, which you could use with any kind of cutter shape.

No they can't. You need a recipe with a stiff dough that you roll out (e.g. gingerbread). Some biscuits (e.g. chocolate chip cookies) spread out when they're cooking so won't hold the shape of the cutter.

Ah I see, thank you for that. We were thinking of making double chocolate cookies and they look quite chunky and rough in the picture, I was wondering if I just rolled the mixture out with a rolling pin then I could use a cookie cutter, but obviously not.
