Maple syrup - fridge or cupboard once opened?

Bought some maple syrup to go on pancakes (OH loves pancakes and I like to make them, so everyone's a winner). The bottle says 'once opened refridgerate and consume within 28 days'.

Does it really need to go in the fridge? I'm always tight for fridge space and I don't really want something else occupying space which could be used for more valuable stuff, like cold sausages and cold bacon and cold curry and cold pizza salad.

What does everyone else do?

Yes it does need tp go in the fridge, it goes mouldy like jam if left out.

I leave mine out for ages and hasn't gone mouldy yet...!

So that's one yes and one no. I'm totally confused now.

One that had been in my fridge for a while did go mouldy. I always keep in the fridge once its opened but usually longer than 28 days. At over £5 a bottle cant afford to use it very often.
