Pack up vs school lunch

I have 2 dcs aged 7 and 9. They have been on school lunches for the last 2 months as having kitchen redone. It is now finished so I could go back to doing pack ups. Before they were having pack-ups 3-4 times a week +1/2 school dinners. I reckon going back would save us £50 pm. However I have read that dcs do better academically with school lunches, they prefer them and it's obviously less hassle. Mumsnet jury help me decide..

I think that if you can afford it and your children like the lunches, stick with school meals. I'm very sceptical about claims that they would do better (I assume that is based on the fact that a few parents send in utter crap - a well made packed lunch could be way better nutritionally than some school meals) but my children have school meals as they have no choice at their school and I love it. I even make them have school pack-ups on trips as I loathe making packed lunches.

It's very personal, some people will tell you horror stories about their children not eating at all well on school meals but if your's like it, stick with it.

Thanks Petit donkey. It does seem like a lot of money written down like that. But it's only the same as a takeaway coffee every day or a couple of takeaways a month.
