Buffet items - ideas needed!

I am absolutely drawing a blank here. I only need one dish/item for a buffet that I am contributing to - savoury or sweet- and the only thing I can think of is quiche, which I don't want to make as I am bored of it Grin. Also there will be quite a few dishes from WI member so it has to be good. Cold would work probably better than warm. Any fancy ideas oh ye MN foodies?

I am a total non-cook, but could you copy a supermarket dish. Some of the salads in M&S are scrummy, eg edame beans, carrot salad, there is a butternut squash one as well. Have fun :)

A bit retro but beef and horseradish volavonts ( I know that isn't spelt right Blush ) I love them but nobody does them at parties anymore

I always do an amazing tuna pasta salad dish for buffets, if you're interested?

Not fancy but I recently took to a party strawberries filled with cheesecake mix with crumbled digestives as a 'dip' on the side - they went down well.

Other ideas;
red onion tart tartin type thingy, maybe with goats cheese.
a whole cooked ham - maybe Nigella's in coke?
Salmon and watercress salad
Cold roast fillet of beef
homemade sausage rolls or a big sausage pie
one of those mahoosive sandwich things where you take the filling out of a loaf of bread and layer it up and then weight it - served in slices... know what I mean?
Roasted vegetable couscous

large baked cheesecake
individual meringues (I have a FAB recipe if you want it) with a bowl of berries and cream.

I also like confused's idea about copying a supermarket salad.

I love a buffet!!

here was the inspiration for the strawberries.

wheredidiputit · 17/06/2013 19:46

Or as said petitdonkey Roasted veg or loaf

Oh some really good ideas there. Thanks everyone. Those strawberries look yummy. Feegle, could I have the recipe for the tuna pasta salad please if you don't mind?

Course, Athena

500g of cooked, drained and cooled dried pasta (fusilli, bows or penne are great but anything would do).

2 standard cans of tuna in sunflower oil, drained.

1 small can of sweetcorn, drained (green giant really is the best for this, I've found).

1 small red pepper, 1 small green pepper, chopped into small dice (roughly same size as the sweetcorn).

1 small bunch of spring onions, again diced roughly the same size as the peppers.

Handful of fresh parsley, finely chopped.

Mayo and salad cream.

Mix everything in a large bowl adding little amounts of the mayo and sc until you're happy with the consistency, then add frashly ground black pepper.

It's a buffet crowd pleaser Grin

Jamie Oliver's pasta salad is good, I also had success with a griddled courgette and ricotta salad from the good food magazine.

I made a fab couscous salad recently.

Make up couscous as per instructions. Blanch peas and broad beans. Fry little cubes of courgette gently in a little olive oil. Make a dressing by whisking together lemon juice, olive oil and a little crushed garlic. Toss the whole thing together with lots of chopped mint and parsley. (you want quite a high ratio of veg/herbs to couscous)

It was gorgeous.
