Cake off cuts ideas. Cake pops?

I've a box of off cuts of sponge and thought DD and u could have a play with them today, and fancied cake pops as have never tried it.

I have icing sugar and butter so I guess could mind the crumbs with this, but what to cover with? A local shop sells candy melts but at £3.99 a bag it's a little more than I wanted to pay just to play! Will melted chocolate work ok?

Just need to find some sticks then I guess, anywhere good for this?

Would drinking straws work as sticks?

I'm open to other ideas too though!

Melted choc works ok, have done cake pops with dairy milk and they were fine. I assume other choc works ok too.

Most important thing is to stick the cake-icing balls in the freezer for an hour or two before coating, it makes them cold enough for the chocolate to form a thick even coating around the ball. Otherwise the cake just falls into the chocolate and makes a mess.

Don't know about the sticks, but a vegetable steamer has holes just the right size to hold them when they're done!

DM used to add cake off cuts to treacle tart filling.
