what can I do with 3 egg yolks?

SSSandy · 28/05/2006 19:38

Made a pavlova for dessert today (meringue base with cream and fruit), so only needed the egg whites and I have 3 yolks left.

What can I do with the yolks? Any ideas anyone?

home made mayonnaise......?

WigWamBam · 28/05/2006 19:48

\link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/strawberryzabaglione_67376.shtml\Strawberry Zabaglione}. When I've made this I mix a tub of Mascarpone cheese into the egg yolks as well, and is gorgeous.

MarsLady · 28/05/2006 19:52

yup! Those were my suggestions... mayonnaise or zabaglione. Grin

SSSandy · 28/05/2006 22:06

Thanks for the replies but I was really thinking more in terms of an evening meal, not a dessert, since I am trying to lose weight Smile

My family don't eat mayonnaise unfortunately (one of the few things they won't touch).

Unfortunately, anything that you add three egg yolks to is going to be rich isn't it?!

I make the topping for moussaka with a large tub of greek yogurt and a couple of eggs - guess you could substitute three egg yolks instead?

WigWamBam · 28/05/2006 22:11

The only recipes I know for egg yolks are creamy and calorific! What about something like a Hollandaise sauce to dip asparagus spears into?

MarsLady · 28/05/2006 22:12

Then a lovely rich omelette it is! Grin

Juggle messily and somewhat disappointingly?

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 28/05/2006 22:24

ice cream/home made custard (the former being the latter except froxen)

SSSandy · 28/05/2006 22:27

Hmm interesting ideas. Asparagas is in season too.

Good point hunkermunker, don't need to eat them really. Read somewhere you can use egg yolk as conditioner but don't fancy trying to wash egg yolk out of my hair.

If you use egg as a conditioner, use very cool water to wash and rinse it out and you'll be fine - it washes out well.

If you use warm water (or heaven forbid HOT water) you'll end up with scrambled egg in your hair, which does not wash out well!!

SSSandy · 28/05/2006 22:32

would look like severe dandruff! Grin

is egg yolk any good as a conditioner though?

OP posts:
WigWamBam · 28/05/2006 22:34

Whole egg is really good as a conditioner so I would imagine egg yolk would be good too.

suejonez · 28/05/2006 22:49

chocolate mousse (I think Delias recipe has egg yolk in it)

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 29/05/2006 00:17

but you have to be careful not to rinse it with too hot water or it scrambles. not good.

NannyL · 29/05/2006 16:49

make ICE CREAM

Yummy!

SSSandy · 30/05/2006 09:26

How DO you make ice-cream , Nanny? I've never tried it. Sounds like a fun activity though, beats ironing anyway!

OP posts:
thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 30/05/2006 09:53

you make proper custard - which is essentially the first bit of the zabaglione recipe below and you put in in an ice cream maker, or in a bowl, in the freezer. If the latter you have to stir it every hour or so.

bluejelly · 30/05/2006 10:19

Egg and lemon soup. Delicious

SSSandy · 30/05/2006 11:57

bluejelly , can you give me your recipe for egg and lemon soup? Never heard of that before, but I make soup around 3 x a week, so a change is always welcome:)

I'm putting two of the yolks in my hair now though, see what happens...

Oh hollandaise sauce yum yum!

With asparagus to dip in it. Mmmmm

FrannyandZooey · 30/05/2006 12:03

Give them to your cat, it makes their fur lovely and shiny :)

Or you could follow the old traditional method of leaving them in a mug in the fridge for 3 weeks then going "bleeurgh! Who's left this in here?" and chucking them out.

bluejelly · 30/05/2006 12:05

It's greek (also known as avgolemoni)
Will dig it out for you and post later...

SSSandy · 30/05/2006 12:20

Thanks bluejelly :)

I put 2 in my hair. Not sure about this really. Will keep you updated.

No cats in our house!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't stand cats, gleaming fur or otherwise, sorry ..
