Maraschino Cherries - how can I use them?

Every year I buy 1 jar of maraschino cherries to put into a trifle at Christmas. Last year I bought a jar but didn't make a trifle, hence this question. I don't fancy doing another trifle, so are there any other ways I can use the cherries? Would they work cooked in a sponge cake?

Maraschino Cherries are also known as Mummified Cherries.
According to my Nanny, one never digests them and they stay in you, somewhere, stuck to your large intestine most likely, forever.

Simple answer to those unshiftable pounds - it's the cherries, you know.

In our house we eat them out the jar. They are very yummy in a chocolate sponge or added to chocolate chip muffins.

Lots of cherry cake recipes here
