I dug out some bacon I had frozen ages ago to defrost. I now realise it has been there since about November last year and the OOD is DEc 2005.

Whats the recomendations?

I vote for ok..bacon has so much salts and nitrates etc in..but don't keep for longer than a couple of days now it's been liberated Smile

They say 6 months but i would say its safe for up to a year at least.
It will be fine to use!

Good as I have nothing else and about 80p in my purse, its smaked bacon anyway which according to my MIL will last until the end of time. Grin
Thanks.

As long as it was still within date when frozen then you are ok.

As long as your freezer is reliable then the 'star' use by dates are purely recommendations. Stuff won't go off but might lose a bit of texture or flavour if kept longer.

I wouldn't even think twice about those dates :) Would use the same day as defrosting though, poss the next day if not opened until then.

Well it was decidedly yuck, it was really chewy and well yuck!

Perhaps defrosting it in the microwave killed it though Grin.

I don't know about whether it's safe or not, but I quite often put a pack of bacon in a bowl of water (cold) to speed up the defrosting.

Anyone know if this is terrible?

Skribble · 26/05/2006 00:23

Never even thouht about that, cold water should be fine for defrosting.
