Help! Spectacularly bland ragu! How can I cheer it up?

Making a lasagne and the ragu part is sooooo bland and flavourless. I've added more beef stock, more tomato puree and some balsamic vinegar but it's still dull. Any ideas?

I sometimes add a pinch of sugar, Worcestershire sauce or a small teaspoon of marmite, depending on what I think it's lacking.
Also try adding a bit more seasoning, just a touch more salt can perk up most dishes.

Worcester sauce? Pinch of sugar? Herbs, ?

SneakyBiscuitEater · 14/05/2013 13:25

Wine and fresh basil if you have it.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 14/05/2013 13:26

Marmite.

AMumInScotland · 14/05/2013 13:27

Worcestershire sauce and mustard powder if you have any in

Wine? I wish.

Am not adding any salt as it needs to be toddler-suitable. Might try a spoonful with a little salt to see if that's the whole problem

Take out a portion for the toddler(s) and then add a lot teaspoon of salt?

MakesCakesWhenStressed · 14/05/2013 13:37

that would be the best option but the sneaky bugger prefers the shirt off my back food off my plate so I have to give myself a larger portion then 'share' it.

Pinch of chilli flakes? Not so much that you can feel the heat just enough to give a little oomph. Smoked paprika works too, again just a pinch.
