on Facebook I've seen pictures of a cake made by 1st baking small balls of colored sponge, then baking THEM in a white sponge mix. it looks amazing, but I would have thought that the twice cooked colored balls would be very dry. has anyone cooked this?

I haven't made it myself but I was so curious I figured I would find what you were talking about on pinterest (source of all crazy ideas) and found it: like this?

In the recipe she says she underbaked the balls of coloured sponge so they wouldn't dry out on the second bake, which I guess makes sense.

that's the one! I've just ordered the tin for the balls...

You could try freezing raw coloured mix and using an icecream scoop to ball it, then add to your cake mix. It should bake through as normal.
