Is baking powder the same thing as bicarbonate of soda?

And if not can I use BofC instead of baking powder? Will it make much difference?

Not the same thing. Bicarb is gentler as a raising agent I think. Bicarbonate of soda is sometimes referred to as baking soda. Best to go and buy some baking powder if you're baking cakes.
